May count as deus ex machina, maybe. May count as luck out, maybe. But what I'm talking about is when the hero is screwed and manages to survive thanks to some external factor. For example:

The bad guy has the good guy tied up and has a gun aimed at him.

BANG!

The good guy flinches, looks down, sees he isn't injured, looks at the bad guy, who coughs up blood and falls over, revealing the buddy/ally we all thought died.

Or:

The bad guy has the good guy tied up and has a gun aimed at him.

BANG!

The water heater the good guy had been putting off having repaired explodes with extremely convenient timing, taking out the bad guy.

I don't understand what I'm supposed to get out of these kinds of things.

It can suck but also it may be good too. End of two towers is this and it was amazing then.

Tension comes when you're not sure if the hero is going to die or not. In a show like Game of Thrones or a movie like The Departed, where death is frequent, unglamorous, and unpredictable, a scene with the hero in danger can be incredibly tense.

In a James Bond movie, though, there's never even a moment's consideration that he might die, so the fun of a 'tense' scene becomes...how is he going to get out of this one? The more absurd the timing and circumstance, the more fun it can be. It fails when it takes itself too seriously.

I don't understand what I'm supposed to get out of these kinds of things.

In your first example it's really obvious, if you can't understand the appeal of 'dude who we thought died saves the day literally at the last moment' even if you don't personally like it then I kinda question your mental state

I understand the drama of it but I don't understand what I'm supposed to learn from it, like even in-universe. I guess something something power of friendship?

The best parts about this:

  1. I'm not sure anyone remembers that it's a reference to The OC.
  2. Shia LaBeouf enters the scene and immediately someone opens fire, as is proper.
