Pokemon opinions always tend to be decisive.

Anyway, Pokemon is becoming a long and storied video game series. What is the smartest thing Pokemon has done? What's the dumbest? And what feature or gimmick is overrated or underrated?

A lot of the QoL changes they made in gen 8 have really positively impacted my experience with the games:
Adding nature mints
Making it easier to farm money / exp candies
Daycare improvements like being able to pass egg moves without breeding
While likely accidental, the raid den exploits are super valuable because they make getting good/rare Pokemon a lot easier
The pokeball tiers and rewards in competitive make online battling easily accessible and rewarding

It's so much easier to build a competitive team than it ever was before.

Making TMs not single-use was pretty great too, same with removing HMs. A bit of a step backwards in g8 with TRs, but at least they're really easy to get.

The most recent DLC also made EV vitamins cost less and added a way to reset EVs completely. There's also a way to use Pokemon from a previous game in competitive, which is really nice. And lastly, you can now give normal 'mons the ability to gmax instead.

In terms of dumb stuff, there are always a bunch of gimmicks that don't work very well \_()_/

Smartest is probably making two different versions. Pretty sure it's the biggest reason the game was a success. Plus as much as I hate it they're raking in the dough now. Honorable mention to Breeding tho

Dumbest, oh god where do I start. Either not being able to transfer Gen 2-Gen 3 or Dexit. Then again I don't think the former was possible. Personally though I hate how they handle mythicals.

As far as gimmicks go I think most are properly rated. I think Double Battles are probably the best. As far as the newer gimmicks go, everything but Mega Evos suck. Z Crystals are really boring and Dynamax is somehow even more boring

B/W scaling XP based on the difference between your Pokemon and the opponent, plus Audinos for easy grinding, basically made the leveling curve and the ease of adding new Pokemon to your team perfect to me. Changes to Exp Share in X/Y were good on paper but they never changed the game's balance to account for that so everything was too easy

Haven't played Gen 7 or 8 and don't really have any desire to. I dont think the 3D games have ever looked as good as the 2D ones and I dont like the gimmicks they keep bringing in for one generation

What is this, some kind of joke?!
Go, then. There are other worlds than these.

The actual games, ie the single-player stories you need to quest through, are RPG relics of the mid-90s and not even remotely interesting. They're a chore to play through and I barely managed to finish this gen. The competitive depth in VGC has been steadily improving, though, so it's worth it if you want to do that. But I can't understand why anyone would want to just... play the games. Every line of dialog is a razor across the cortex and the battles could be won by a goldfish (I think someone literally did this)

This, pretty much. As a shiny breeder Gen 8 has so many QoL details.
