Most criticism of the plot doesn't seem to be about the quality of writing, the character arcs, or the dialogue. It really seems to just boil down to "The story did stuff I don't like"

I feel like people investing too much in how they want stories to go have gotten more frequent. If somebody watches several hours of theories/prediction videos, and spends time in echo chambered forums talking about what they want to see, they're only setting themselves up for disappointment for when it doesn't go exactly how they wanted.

Life of Black Tiger is hilarious. Definitely brought me more entertainment than The Last of Us Pt. II

The funny thing is I predicted what happened early on in the game because of how the trailer was edited. They tried to hide it but they could only do so much. The most surprising thing is you play as the person who does it.

I think it's poorly written. Especially the end, Ellie acts nonsensically and out of character in order to drive a cliche point to the player that falls completely flat

Just about every game this gen is worse than Death Stranding, so yes, but TLoU PT II is still great from what I've played so far (8 hours or so).

Gameplay-wise, the game is great. Polished up and refined from the first game, the enemy choices and level design are much better and make stealth/combat sections really engaging with the options you're given. Exploration is taken up a notch and there's so much you could feasibly miss, in terms of goodies and world-building.

Graphics are top-notch. I've been consistently stopping in various times to just take in the environment because it just looks incredible most of the time. Color choices are great too, and character/facial animations are better than ever.

Story is...well it's subjective. I can see how some people would be mad about some of its direction (one guy saying he'd like it better if it was structured differently) but so far I'm liking it. Just slow-paced is all. Not much is happening in Seattle. (Haven't gotten to the last half of the game yet.)

Really? I think it's fair to say that it's overblown, but killing off the main character in the series is a purposefully controversial ploy to try to emotionally invest the audience in your narrative. People are going to be understandably upset if the original game meant something to them. And I think it's a cheap foundation for what could ultimately only amount to a melodrama, because it relies on the quality of the original narrative to evoke a response instead of earning one through good writing. You could argue that Joel's story wasn't over and that his actions demanded consequences, but that's a cop out. That story didn't need to continue, and it's more powerful to leave it as is with humanity's fate inconsequential to a man who got away with murder to protect someone he loved. And it's ultimately to serve some trite revenge plot? I think you can appreciate how that might be insulting.

There's also an element of certain people being upset because they replaced the prototypical male lead with modern gender and sexual identity politics. Yes, they're bigots, but in a world where a not insignificant amount of men get upset whenever women in video games are portrayed as more than busty accessories, Naughty Dog replacing the invested masculine player surrogate with a sociopolitical message is purposefully egregious.
