when common sense from the beginning should be telling you that having any form of barrier/mask is always better in any given situation over not having one with this contagious virus

How did that make any sense? but ppl just ate that shit up blindly and mocked me for being pro-mask using strawman shit like 'oh it makes you touch your face more' or 'it doesnt protect you only keeps it contained if you have the virus' when keeping it contained when ppl could be asymptomatic carriers was more than enough reason to be encouraging mask use. And how instead of discouraging mask use, encouraging proper mask usage should have been what was promoted.

I was always promoting you were better off wearing a home made plain cloth mask over nothing. Reason why doesnt matter. Having one on is always better than not having one. And FFS thats what is encouraged to use now if you dont have medical masks. I accepted (at the time) that masks dont protect you, but saw that if they do indeed minimize spread of ppl who have it (as the WHO said) and that there are asymptomatic carriers....then its the logical thing that more people should be wearing masks, not discouraging it.

So if it stops spreading the disease why wouldnt you encourage wearing masks even if its made of tube socks or even panties if thats all thats available to you?

Ive always had the stance that no matter what reason you wear a mask. Whether its to stop spreading it, or thinking it will protect you. That if you have one on, that you are better off having one on

Eg. If someone wears one because they ignorantly think it protects them. then they are ignorantly benefiting society because they could have been an asymptomatic carrier so them having one on means they are minimizing spread

Simply put, that has always been my stance on it.

Wearing a mask is useful primarily because it benefits others, and in tandem when everyone else wears masks it benefits you.

See - here you go again. You shouldn't go around thinking a plain cloth mask will protect you from being infected, you should actually know why you're using the mask, what it does and do it with an informed purpose, which in this case is to help prevent your germs from infecting other people when you can't distance safely. If you don't know why you're doing it you get into problems where you flaunt the other and more important public health advice because you feel invincible because you're wearing a plain cloth mask.

If the mask isn't an N-95 it's next to useless. This was the common advice from WHO and it has been consistent. When it changed to "Just wear a mask" they were still making articles about how many N95 fakes there are. If any mask is just as good that wouldn't be the case. Get yourself an N95. If you don't have an N95? You're not really doing anything. So many people are wearing cheap worthless masks.

That information is outdated. It presents spread a lot because it stops the droplets when people are talking.

Also, just so we are clear, I never defended not using a mask nor did I "troll" you over it. I provided reasons why wearing a mask wasn't the be-all-end-all nor why it was effective for most people and you more or less lost your shit. Which is why I have you tagged appropriately as "whines about facemasks".

It doesn't stop the spread entirely (non N95.) they stopped recommending N95 because the layman doesn't know how to properly use them. So they are next to worthless for the average consumer. They're just buying up stock over people who can and do need them (nurses) and this is why they recommend people to use normal masks at this point. They are still preventing the spread of people selling N95 because they are far more effective than the average mask you find in the store.

Regular masks reduce spread by, as you mentioned, stopping the droplets but that only matters if you have the infection (and many do without realizing it. So it protects people from yourself in case you might be a carrier) but even then that isn't fool proof. Especially when the average person adjusts their mask, tends to touch their face, and the fact that it can still infect through the eyes and via other bodily fluids. If you're looking to protect yourself, you want an N-95 and learn how it's used. Oh and.. wash your hands.

Not 100% effective is not the same as not effective. Even if it reduces the chance by only half, it does a ton to slow the spread.

Look, I'm going to be honest with you. Never in the history of the world has humanity as a whole decided to act in the best interests of everyone around them. Never in the future will this occur either. This is because as a species we are not a hive mind. Arguing with people to act in the interest in others is going to always end in futility. So if you are seeking to protect yourself then you need to wear an N-95. The reason I say, in the interest of self protection, masks are useless is due to the fact that wearing one does not save you from getting sick. Only from saving others.

Yes. In a perfect world. Everyone would wear masks. This would reduce the infection rate to negligible. This will not happen. This isn't going to happen. You are going to encounter people who, for whatever reason, refuse to wear one. So even if YOU choose to do so. You will remain at risk. So get an N-95.

It happens in Asian countries. America is just being stupid.

I remember some people saying save the masks for health care workers you don't need them. This was even for surgical masks. It was so dumb even at that time since if universal masks help them it would help regular folk.

But helping regular folk wasn't cared about at that time which fucked up since we should have been thinking why not prevent as many people from going to the hospital as possible in the first place. Thankfully we are aware of the benefits of helping regular folk now.

I don't think I made fun of anybody for wearing a mask. I know I gave some people crap for fear-mongering and/or hoarding, and I know that I pointed to studies that show that cloth masks only block 2% of particles making them functionally useless. Both of those things are still true. But as far as I can remember I didn't tell people to not wear n95 or surgical masks if they had them, just that homemade cloth masks weren't going to stop a virus from getting through.

If anyone remembers back in February when I talked about being in quarantine at the US Air Force base after leaving Wuhan the CDC repeatedly told us we didn't need to wear masks and they were optional. Once we got out of quarantine no one was wearing them except me. Then I get on my flight to Japan and almost everyone is wearing a mask. I knew the US was fucked about halfway through that quarantine based on how badly the CDC was handling it.

A guy at my gym was mocking me for wearing one a month ago. He's also a racist who went on a tirade about black people to me before. To him, wearing a mask is an affront to his machismo
