Ooh interesting. Booker shifted from 72% of Fayette County to 50% of Fayette county once mail-in was counted

Which my friend points out probably related to some people having mailed in so early it was before booker really surged toward the end

Didn't consider that! Looks like it'll be a nailbiter until Jefferson reports. Very curious to see how it goes

So this is a fun story...

This was tweeted out with multiple other tweets.

Two African-American girls were missing. A woman supposedly tracked them to a house using a phone locator when police wouldn't help. They then had an angry mob go to the home. And shots were fired. Police responded to the scene due to the shots. According to how the story goes, the cops then smuggled out the people from the house. The mob then entered the house on their own after police said the girls weren't there and found and freed the girls themselves as police were shooting rubber bullets and tear gas at the mob trying to disperse them as they were saving the girls.

What really happened...

Angry mob insists that this house is where the girls are. Police checked the house multiple times looking for the girls and didn't find them. Shots were fired at some point. Police responded again to the scene and checked again for the girls and didn't find them. Angry mob sets fire to the house. Fire department responding to the fire was attacked by angry mob. Police fire rubber bullets and tear gas at mob due to them attacking the fire department. Girls were found later on 3 miles away at a different location and weren't at the house. Family is displaced due to their house being burned down.

Defund the Police. I guess.

Just some rough numbers at the moment:

Current dem votes: 528213
Estimated percent of total votes: 94%
Projected final total: 577,46

Current rep votes: 388499
Estimated percent of total votes: 74%
Projected final total: 524,999

Voting in the republican primary is likely supressed somewhat because McConnell wasn't really running against someone (and these numbers could likely change somewhat) but...

Damn this really could've been a fun November. McGrath already lost a more democratic subsection of Kentucky in 2018 so I have zero faith in her to pull this out and get those Booker voters. But this could've at least been mildly interesting to watch! Now its just kinda bleh.

Okay so I was reading some more qualified opinions on what was going on in that SCOTUS ruling in Montana and uhhh... it gets worse the more I read.

https://twitter.com/mjs_DC/status/1277970668420624392

First up, some backstory on the case: My initial reaction was a bit off. The Montana legislature established a program that granted tax credits to those who donated to organizations that awarded scholarships for private school tuition. Since the Montana Constitution forbids government aid to any school controlled in whole or part by a religion Montana stipulated that you couldn't use these scholarships at religious schools.

Some parents who were thus barred from using the scholarships sued and the Montana Supreme Court ruled that the law, absent that modification (which was done by the Revenue Department not the legislature), meant it was aiding religious schools and struck down the program in its entirety.

What SCOTUS did here was say that the "no aid can go to religious schools" provision (in the Montana Constitution) is religious discrimination and prohibited by the Free Exercise clause of the US Constitution and that therefore the MT Supreme Court was wrong to strike down the program for that reason.

Which is waaaaay more extreme than the impression I got from the initial read-out of the decision and hence my original post since I was F5'ing for SCOTUS decisions this morning.

So then I got to reading the opinions and oh boy.

Roberts wrote the opinion of the court but the real "..."s are in the opinion filed separately by Thomas, which Gorsuch joins.

"Under the modern, but erroneous, view of the Establishment Clause, the government must treat all religions equally and treat religion equally to nonreligion."

"As I have explained in previous cases, at the founding, the Caluse served only to 'protec[t] States, and by extension their citizens, from the imposition of an established religion by the Federal Government" (xp's note: Use of italics are not mine, that's straight from the opinion.)

"Properly understood, the Establishment Clause does not prohibit States from favoring religion."

"This, too, presupposes that the Establishment Clause prohibits the government from favoring religion or taking steps to promote it. But as described supra, at 2-3, the Establishment Clause does nothing of the sort."

The separate opinion by Justice Thomas is not the holding of the Supreme Court. It does not have the support of 5 justices. Justice Thomas very frequently expresses his very unique perspective on the meaning of the Constitution, that doesn't make them law without a majority supporting it.

Hey I did at least say straight up why the numbers I was lazily running were untrustworthy and bad! Lol I can be biased and self-aware at the same time.

It is disappointing for a few reasons though. I don't hate amy or anything like that, and I do think with a huge national (hell even global) push, change can happen. It's just a shame when you look at the big picture. She raised over $40Mil and Booker had less than $1Mil. One figure I saw said 97% of her fundraising was from out of state. If the election was held today Booker would probably win. That's big time speculation but all the shifts from in-person to mail-in ballots were consistent regardless of urban or rural counties. Booker just surged too late, it seems. Which makes sense given I wasn't paying much attention to the race until I got my card about absentee voting. I should've been more cognizant of the likely sizeable incoming shift there! Still, I thought Jefferson, being his home county and the epicenter of KY's black voters, would buck that trend much harder than it seemingly did.

What I'm really curious to hear explained (and I loathe to even post this here) is the discrepancy between reports of Jefferson receiving 185k absentee ballots and the overall reported votes being 150k. Unclear at this time if the 185k figure is just inaccurate or what happened to the rest of them. I saw an unofficial but very adamant source in Twitter saying the number of absentee ballots which weren't signed Fayette County was 6,000. /facepalm. But again that was just some guy who said he knows the court clerk so I'm still waiting to hear this stuff addresses more directly.

Just to throw this out there now, too, keep in mind that had the election been held on its originally scheduled date, it wouldn't even have been a contest.

Overall this is still a historic and record breaking election for Kentucky. And it's showed a ton of great stuff that you really love to see. We've got a lot of problems in the eyes of the nation but at least we can say we've elected a democratic governor, more democrats voted in the primary than republicans (I know there's an obvious lack of incentive for republicans to vote but shhhh maybe they won't realize they should vote in November -- plus hey a 100,000 margin in a state of 4mil is pretty sizeable!), we are capable of supporting a young progressive black man, etc.

This isn't the last campaign Charles Booker will run.

So heres what Ill say about my county...

I went to the courthouse and got election results. In the 2018 primary, we had 14,277 democrats vote in this county. This election, we had 22,118 vote! 7,841 more dems in this county decided to use their voice! And that, is a huge positive.

Another positive, of the 18,982 republicans in this county who voted, 2,544 of them were uncommitted when it came to their presidential vote. Across the state 13% of republicans in a deep red state, chose NOT to vote for the republican incumbent for president. This. Is. Huge.

So while every race didnt go how I wanted, the movement is still in motion and we have to keep our eyes on the prize. Stay active people. You win some, you lose some, but youll lose every damn time you quit. So take a breath, grab a drink, and get up tomorrow because the goal hasnt changed...the path is just a little different. Eyes on the prize friends!!!! Im proud of Madison County for using their voice! #DitchMitch #DumpTrump #SlayThayer #PassonMassie #wegotworktodo

https://www.theguardian.com/world/commentisfree/2020/jun/30/a-10-budget-cut-to-the-us-military-budget-by-10-to-help-save-lives-in-this-pandemic

Bernie is proposing an amendment to the military spending bill currently going through the Senate, proposing a 10% cut. I support this. Bernie proposes spending the savings on:

Create jobs by building affordable housing, schools, childcare centers, community health centers, public hospitals, libraries, sustainable energy projects, and clean drinking water facilities.

Yes to building houses, childcare centers, public hospitals, libraries, sustainable energy, and clean drinking water facilities. Not sure on what community health centers means. Oppose additional public primary and secondary schools at this time.

Improve education by hiring more public school teachers to reduce class sizes, ensuring teachers receive adequate pay, providing nutritious meals to children and parents, and offering free tuition for public colleges, universities, and trade schools.

Oppose. Would support the federal government opening some federal public colleges to compete with the college-industrial complex that charges Americans a fortune to go to school.

Make housing more affordable by providing rental assistance and bringing an end to homelessness.

I also want to end homelessness but I'm not sure that providing rental assistance is going to do it. That seems like it will just cause the rents to go up across the board. So oppose.

I actually disagree. I think Trump's best chance is probably to go for herd immunity by September. Then he can declare victory over the virus and say that we are going to lead the world economically for years because we can run at 100% while other countries will still need to have social distancing. But for that to happen, a lot more people need to get sick now. People are very quick to forget the past as long as the present is good.

This could also result in him being extremely unpopular for not caring about life. Not sure which way the wind will blow on that, but I can see the scenario where people don't blame him for the deaths and decide that sooner or later, all the countries will suffer the same level of death (plus a lot of pain from economic collapse).
