I think the protestors have been infiltrated by bad faith actors that want to turn public opinion against the protestors

That always happens but most of the "bad actors" tend to do things like incite looting or start fights to turn peaceful protests violent. Sometimes they're white supremacists or sometimes they're FBI or sometimes they're both.

I dont' care if slaves helped build the statue it is still wrong. the world is different now. the slaves probably didn't have the world view we have today and didn't realize how offensive it looks to make a statue depicting a white man as a savior god to black people. also, he didnt know back then, that Lincoln was a racist himself. he kept it secret in his journals and in that time, with no internet or documentaries or books written about him yet, nobody knew. but we know now. Lincoln was not as good as people think. he hated black people. he just disagreed they should be slaves. but it wasn't for the reasons people think. it was mainly for political reasons. and he was going to take all the slaves and ship them back to africa. he still didn;t think they should ever be granted citizenship or full equal rights. he was still racist

Why don't all these protesters just pack up their stuff and move and "give back the land to natives". Hooray! Lets all go back to Europe!

I didn't know the statue existed. but I still say tear it down. when i found out about it and saw a picture of it, it shocked me that such a statue actually exists.

Tough shit if protestors want them torn down. They don't get to decide that unilaterally. Put it to a citywide vote so that other people affected by it have a say in it.

I mean ever in any time period. europe obviously won't let a bunch of descendents of people who left, come flooding back into their countries. they don't consider us citizens. and they don;t want millions of new immigrants that will wreck their society. some of us might be able to get in, if we were a third world country but we are not. it's actually extremely hard for a first world nation citizen to move to another first world country. they don't want us unless we are highly valuable like a brain surgeon or something

Of note for some other people in here:

Although formerly enslaved Americans paid for this statue to be built in 1876, the design and sculpting process was done without their input, and it shows. The statue fails to note in any way how enslaved African Americans pushed for their own emancipation. Understandably, they were only recently liberated from slavery and were grateful for any recognition of their freedom. However, in his keynote address at the unveiling of this statue, Frederick Douglass also expressed his displeasure with the statue.

he's not even a former slave. he is still in chains. but yes, showing a lowly slave and a godlike lincoln standing over him is an offensive look.

if the statue showed a normal dressed black man shaking lincolns hand it would better. this guy is in chains and in rags. and looking miserable. he should be in a business suit and smiling as he stands like an equal.

The present matters more than history. Secondly while I agree the statue needs to be removed I don't think it should be torn down. The politicians there also want it removed. Just give them some fucking time to find a company willing to pick it up and haul it off.

there is an argument to be made that monuments in general celebrating the end of slavery do not belong in a country where in many ways slavery and certainly inequality have persisted to the present day

for example here in Madison WI protesters just tore down a statue of a woman called forward that is meant to represent progresswith the reasoning that until the government actually makes meaningful change to move forward, the statue does not represent the state

but of course certain segments of the population will just try to paint it as stupid mob mentality or whatever
