One thing is a word that does absolutely no physical harm to a person.

The other thing is violent assault that absolutely causes physical harm and has the potential for serious injury.

One of them is a crime, one of them isn't.

I'm not saying it's okay to be racist, but I'm definitely saying it's not okay to attack people because they said a word (or because you think they said a word)

Trying to have a conversation with that person? Good luck with that. In that moment, talking about it will get you nowhere. You might have a chance if you talk to them about it a few hours later. Not right then.

Honestly, in my opinion, the best way to stop that person right then and there from doing that again in a non violent way is to be publicly shamed by white people in that moment. Then I can see them possibly changing. There is a reason why no sane racist (oxymoron I know) would say that to someone around a bunch of people who are firmly against what he says.

I've punched bullies in the face when they were using words to communicate hostilities towards me. They never did it again.

No, talking to someone (not insulting them back) works. If the black man said something like "Why am I being called that?" it may make the person think - this sort of questioning is also non-confrontational - which is easier for discussion. Using "Why are you calling me that?" is considered more confrontational which may actual stimulate personal offense and the person who stated the slur would get defensive.

I am in no way saying that saying the slur is 'right,' but if we want to have a real conversation, this has to happen. I do the same for my clients (most of which are Indigenous). I place the hate, anger, mistrust, etc. on me in my wording - it gets a lot accomplished a lot faster. It almost causes the person who is escalating to realize that they are not much different than the person they are upset with.

Basically, be the bigger person - this has no basis on race, culture, history, etc - but basis on humanity itself.

Like I said in one of my first posts, I'll even give the guy that hit him the benefit of the doubt and maybe he just misheard him say that word because I believe the guy was talking on the phone to someone. Guy wanted to know if the shirt was too small, so the manager answering someone on the phone with,"oh, they needed something bigger," makes sense how it could be hear as, "it's just some - -"

Because, yeah, I really doubt some store manager is going to be dumb enought to say that around a guy that just flexed how big and masculine he was
