Yeah it did look better as the night went on. It appeared that just about everyone had a mask with them at least, but some kept it down while drinking and smoking.

That's progress. And I can understand lowering it for drinking or smoking as long as no one is right next to them.

I agree. We do need to show that its safe to come here. If it takes everyone wearing masks to do it, so be it. I think the cast majority of Nevadans will follow the mask mandate.

The more populated areas mandated masks about a week ago. Other than that no. Hoping that will slow down the spread some, we'll see in the next few weeks.

I don't even understand what kind of illness could warrant no mask cards (if such a thing existed). I mean respiratory things maybe, but like surgeons wear masks during life-threatening surgery, they're made to be breathable if that's the issue...

Apparently the mortality rate of COVID has gone way down at this hospital in Italy. Of course it's just one hospital in Italy so it may or may not actually mean anything to those of us in the US. But comparing the number of new cases in the US to the number of deaths over time I do think the mortality rate has gone down here as well. We'll probably see some sort of spike in deaths due to the huge increase in cases, but if the mortality rate really has gone down it might not be as bad as people expect.

Still, it's very important to continue wearing masks and social distancing. Hospitals reaching capacity = more people dying.

I swear I get more accurate COVID info on here than what national news provides. I saw a recent CBS story about states reversing reopenings and closing some things back down. The story focused on Texas and Florida but then their map lumped Nevada in with those states. As far as I know we haven't closed any businesses back down. We are going with mandatory masks first. They included states that have slowed down on reopening any more, but that's not the same. We weren't really on the verge of going to Phase 3 yet anyway.

Yeah they aren't very good at nuance. Makes me wonder if they're mixing in a tiny bit if fear mongering for ratings.

And also I haven't heard anything about business closings either, just that phase 3 was delayed.

The tiny particle pollution in New York City is thought to aggravate pneumonia. The lockdown in Italy will have reduced tiny particle pollution.

Can this be why fewer deaths? (That there is less tiny particle air pollution?)

Lots of studies linking fine particle pollution and pneumonia. Here is one.

Is he in the same dimension as Trump?

Reading farther I can see the alignment with Trump: Azar, in an interview with CNNs State of the Union, denied that states reopening prematurely was tied to the spike in cases and instead blamed inappropriate individual behavior that has spread the virus.

Blame it on people not the government.

My point about blaming individuals is that leaving the spread/containment of a potentially dangerous disease up to individuals discretion and then observing that many individuals lack the necessary discretion is non leadership.

On one hand there clearly is a renewed seriousness due to rising cases this past week that the virus isn't going away lightly. But others are really starting to get loud about the falling death counts and somehow thinking it's going to stay that way forever. From what I can tell it seems like they are basing this on two main ideas:

1) Dramatic improvement in treatment. I'm aware there have been important developments, but no miracle cures. Quality of treatment could also take some steps backwards if hospitals reach overload so it's risky to rely on this.

2) Conspiracy-type ideas about herd immunity and how "most of the nation has already had the virus and recovered without ever knowing it." It's nonsense, most people have not had this yet and even less so if you are looking at regions that never had a real peak.

This looks to be exponential growth playing out in real time. Even if the % of fatalities drops extremely, and hopefully that does happen, we're still going to have so many deaths just off pure volume unless action is taken soon. It might be too late really.
