Self-checkout lines are bad enough (almost every time I've used one at a supermarket something goes wrong and an employee has to come over to override the problem). I can't even imagine what kind of shitshow this will be with nothing but self-checkout counters.

The only time I've ever used the regular checkout is when self checkout was down. Surprised they haven't gotten rid of cashiers sooner, not many even use regular checkout at my Walmart and Kroger.

CVS tried doing that in Massachusetts and failed miserably so they went right back to cashiers and 1 or 2 self checkout lines. I think the problem is too many boomers and other older people that literally freeze in place or lose any common sense they have left when confronted by technology.

If they're thinking of going full self checkout, it may be that's exactly why they were there and someone just said what little would be stolen would be less than the salaries of people.

As much as I use self checkout, I wouldn't like it if they replaced cashiers with it everywhere. I cannot forget the time I got stuck behind an old person with a overflowing cart slowly scanning their stuff.

I never use the self checkout at any store. I always go to the cashier to support them, so that I don't have to deal with the machine, and so that they can bag things for me. Especially because I use reusable bags, and that'd just add one more thing for the machine to complain about.

That's why my Walmart disabled those weight scales. Glitches easily and is too much of a hassle for something that cameras and self-checkout associates can handle.

I went to a Costco that had a self-checkout (I think there were 4-6 self-checkout stations in the area or something like that).

The lines for the regular cashiers were always super long, like they are at every Costco. The lines at the self-checkout were not nearly as long and went much more quickly.

Self-checkouts are great and do not deserve the hate they get.

I remember a supermarket in my city does that, but additionally once you have finished you have to pick up your bag and THEN and only then could you pay. Sometimes maybe you only get one or two items you can carry with your hands not needing a bag, but setting them down anywhere on the thing triggers those damn unexpected item messages

I can't see this being a success the way it's currently set up. What about customers who have their carts filled to the brim? Some of those shoppers are definitely not going to want to self-check out in that scenario. It would be very time consuming for many.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. This shit happens to me all the time, sometimes more than once in a single checkout. And usually I have to wait several minutes for someone to come and help me.

Funkydog you're just a liar, you even know and experience computer problems yourself yet you claim it is user error lmao.

Anyways I experienced the same thing. I scan one yogurt place it in the bagging area. I scan the next yogurt and place it the bagging area next to other yogurt.

The computer prompts
"You must place the item in the bagging area."
"Help is on the way."

Cashier comes and examines what happens and counts two yogurts scanned and two yogurts in the bagging and proceeds to scold me for "having a question"

STFU dude.

Worst is if you have a full cart and mid-way one item fucks up and you need to re-do the whole process.

And if you have a full cart after putting the items in the bag there's little room to put lots of items and the cart is still full.

Don't think I've ever seen it happen save for rare occurrences. Usually more annoying is needed some to validate an ID'd product and whoever is meant to be on them doing something else, or with another customer so you get stuck waiting.

I'm sure it happens, but I don't think it's anywhere near as common as people try to claim.

This is the biggest reason why self-checkout only isnt really feasible. Most of the people here that are confident that self-checkout is the future probably just buy a video game and a handful of microwave dinners when they go shopping.
