Legendia has a cool setting, which is one more point in its favor than Zestiria has.

I haven't played Zesty but I love the 2d gameplay

I will admit though, I hate the designs for the characters in Legendia though. Mostly what they're wearing

and that spear guy sucks

Legendia was the first game I remember that i dropped out of sheer disappointment. I was a teen so I typically tried to finish games off. It was a huge stinker.

I picked up Abyss instead of Legendia back in the day because it was less expensive, even though I thought the guy on the Legendia box looked cooler at the time.

Had I ponied up the money at the time I may have never touched the franchise again.

I should disclose that I voted for Legendia without having played Zestiria. Here are my rankings for the games in the series that I've played:

Legendia > Xillia > Xillia 2 > Hearts R > Abyss > Graces f > Symphonia > Vesperia > Symphonia: DotNW

Legendia had my favorite world, great 2D plane combat, and while I usually roll my eyes or even cringe when anime-esque games attempt to be serious/emotional, they succeeded at them far more than I would have expected.

Xillia (and its sequel) make combat from the other games that I have played obsolete. It's loads of fun! It more than makes up how terrible they handled the character arc of Alvin. I think that's what his name was. Certain plot points/story beats were among the most interesting in the series.

Xillia 2 is even better combat-wise with how amazing and varied Ludger is. If not for how embarrassingly stupid the plot often is, even by anime game/Tales of standards, and how it never considers the most glaring of ethical dilemmas leads to a truly awful ending, this could be challenge for the top spot.

Hearts R has two of the funnest players to play as (Gall and Chal, whom I guess were not playable in the original version). It took way too long to unlock faster means of travel though.

Abyss has probably my second favorite world and the most interesting group of antagonists, but I greatly disliked the two leads, and the suspension of disbelief needed to accept Luke's character arc is astronomical. Back to the villains, the game really tried to destroy all that they built up with some of those antagonists at the end.

Graces f is pretty fun, but man what a lame ass cast of characters. It speaks volumes when the best playable character was hardly present in the main game (he shined in the post-game though). The post-battle skits or whatever you want to call them were legitimately funny though. I was taken aback by that.

Part of the reason why Legendia and the Xillias are my top three is because they don't make the mistake of having dungeons with so many lame ass puzzles. Symphonia is probably the worst at this. I had almost no fun in the dungeons. I have a little nostalgia for Symphonia since I think it was the first non-Nintendo game that I reserved, and I played it when I was 13, but the writing is so bad (fuck Genis and Kratos especially), and everything they did kind of well was greatly improved in other games.

Vesperia exists. I don't think it does anything poorly nor well. It left virtually no impression other than regretting having my parents spend $60 on it as a Christmas gift.

Why does Dawn of the New World exist? The monster aspect was at least remotely interesting, but that game is otherwise kind of a dumpster fire. Characters from the previous game were not implemented well. Marta is on a short list of the worst playable characters in the series, and I absolutely cannot how timid Emil is.

I do appreciate you at least writing up your reasoning, though. I'm a little too occupied with work to get into details on my own, but out of the ones I have played enough to judge;

Abyss > Berseria > Vesperia > Graces F > Xillia > Symphonia > Zesteria > Legendia
