It ain't cheap, between design, engineering, construction and QA testing

Think of all the safety requirements that go into these things to not only make them not fall apart, but also give a smooth ride that isn't too intense while maintaining enough momentum to keep the train moving

they're large so they take a lot of material as well as labour time to assemble

they also take a bunch of space

and I imagine require very strict testing, licensing, etc etc procedures

I dunno if maitenence falls into this figure as well but I imagine that's not cheap either

I'd believe it

Well I'm using my knowledge of home prices and extrapolating from there, based on my understanding of how costs escalate with more floors, the routinization of most construction work (vs a rollercoaster, a lot of which I'm assuming is fairly unique), and then comparing that to the size of a big rollercoaster, that's like on the right order of magnitude difference

But ultimately I could be very wrong

$30-40 million is for like a really high end expensive roller coaster.

You can still get a great roller coaster for less than $10 million.

Most roller coasters don't even exceed $20 million in price.

These prices refer to just the roller coaster and not any special theming. That can make the roller coaster way more expensive and usually only Disney and Universal are willing to spend much on theming.

I would be more terrified if roller coasters were cheaply made.

It's like fair rides. I'm sorry I am just not comfortable trusting my life to a ride that can be put together in 3 days.

I've been following the theme/amusement park industry closely for 10 years now. I've been to a lot of places and ridden some rides myself. A lot of info is released when new roller coasters are announced.

I could talk endlessly about various roller coaster companies and the types of coasters they make and their costs.

There is a lot of information on YouTube as well. A ton of roller coaster and theme park content out there.

That's pretty cool dude. What other topics does that cover outside the cost of coasters? Like what do they talk about?

All sorts of stuff.

Roller coaster launches can be pretty complex. There are various ways you can launch a roller coaster train. These types of coasters tend to be more prone to break downs and that is a whole discussion right there.

There are always new types of roller coasters in development and rumors are about where the first installation of each new coaster type may take place. Typically there is around a handful of new coasters built around the country every year. I follow YouTube channels of people who consistently give visual updates of construction progress.

I'd recommend

Theme Park Stop
Expedition Theme Park
Theme Park History

For some YouTube channels. There are way more channels out there and various websites with discussion forums and stuff like that.

Makes sense to me. Despite just being for amusement, a lot of precise engineering needs to go into them to make sure they're safe and stable. That kind of work doesn't come cheap. Then there's construction and material cost

Yeah

But more people drive cars. It's like the flying vs driving argument

Sure you're more likely to die in a car accident, that's because more people travel by car

This.

I'm surprised it doesn't cost more.
