This is almost certainly Steins;Gate. It's regarded as one of the best anime of the century in general, regardless of it's VN origins.

Horror in this genre sounds great, but I feel like I need at least a little bit of interactivity to keep me engaged.

You mentioned the gameplay in Ace Attorney getting streamlined in future installments. Does any of that include the issues I had with it? I didn't hate it, I just wanted more court and less banging my head against the wall at certain points. The story/characters are great, but I don't just want to watch a playthrough of it because, again, I need at least a little bit of interactivity.

Interactivity but without the puzzles thing might be a rare breed.

Maybe check out Ghost Trick? I haven't played that game in ages but I think the puzzles are more intuitive and it's directed by the same director as Ace Attorney as well.

Ghost Trick or Hotel Dusk might be worth a try if you don't mind the puzzle aspects. If you're just wanting to be able to make choices and not much else, then I wouldn't recommend that. I'd go with Steins;Gate, Clannad, or Shibuya 428.

Well, I dunno if I'd recommend Clannad for a novice because it is extremely long, but it's great. You could watch the anime of that one, too.

Steins;Gate and Clannad. Depends on what you want from your anime, but those are two of my all-time favorites.

I doubt this would be an issue, but just in case, Steins;Gate 0 is the sequel to Stein;Gate, not the prequel, despite the name <_<

Mainly saying now since there are immediate severe S;G spoilers in the first seconds, so even am accidental click would be a big problem.

Fate/Stay Night is always a great place to begin with VNs. Pure choices and nothing else.

I found the gameplay of the courtroom segments of Ace Attorney just as frustrating as some of the investigation segments in some respects, if not moreso. Really not a fan of the series in general. The story is solid but certainly not worth going through all that.

The Fate/Stay Night Heaven's Feel movies have been really good, as far as VN-to-anime adaptations go, though you can't really start the series with Heaven's Feel. Think I liked those even more than that route of the VN though which was already amazing.

Steins;Gate is also great though and I voted for it in this topic despite only ever having watched the anime and never playing the VN.

Back to the discussion on whether characters count as story: it varies. I think there's a difference between a narrative where the story IS the characters, and a story that just happens to have good characters in it. The former would be Disco Elysium or Planescape while the latter is FF9. FF9 has one of my favorite casts in gaming, but while I do like the story, its not intrinsically good enough having a great cast that elevates it to the point of me putting it in my Top 10. For fans of FF8 I imagine the logic is similar.

Yeah, I didn't consider FFIX for this list. The other FF games I'd consider would be FFVII and FFVI, which is a very ambitious story, especially for its time, but it struggles to actually tell it well at times.

The Walking Dead is effectively a visual novel. As much as Ace Attorney anyway. So that?

I've played the visual novel and it's fantastic! Certainly the best traditional VN I've played, although I haven't played a ton, admittedly.

Oh shit I'm super into the live action stuff, even if it's really cheesy. Did 428 get given away for free on PS Plus? I feel like a few VN have.

It did. That's how I ended up playing it.

And yeah, 428 can be very cheesy at times, but that looks like your best bet.

Worth keeping an eye out for Death Come True, an FMV game from the Danganronpa guy that's coming out later this month.

I didn't vote, but if I had done FFX, MGS2, Persona 4, Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter and Valkyria Chroncles would have been my top 5. FFX nails its climax and ending story beats, and has a superbly realised world. Don't think it's story is told quite as well as MGS2, but it's a cleaner landing. MGS2's ambition is towering and while it could have used some editing, it packed a massive punch. P4 is more about the characters but I've rarely been so absorbed by such a long game. VC is gentle but lands its big punches - enjoy the characterisation of the two leads a lot. I found BoF:DQ utterly absorbing - love the claustrophic atmosphere, sparse presentation and Ryu's quiet rage.

I might have given a vote to Shadow Hearts 1 - enjoyed it much more than Covenant for reasons I can't fully explain. Yuri Hyuga just bossed it. Others I would have thought about would be: Majora's Mask, The Last of Us, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. FFVII, PW3, DMC3.

Yeah, I've only played Kiwami 1 so far but it's the same concept gameplay-wise. It's not really a yakuza story though, it's a detective/murder mystery kind of deal (yakuza are still involved though)
