FFX has some issues, but they're mostly related to age. It doesn't have the same polish that modern storytelling in games have (partly because it was one of the games that helped pave the way for cinematic storytelling). The core of the story is still very good.

I played FFX most recently at 21. It's actually the game on my list I'm least worried about "holding up" if I were to go back and play it again now, but I suppose that also directly comes from the fact that I've played it to completion like 5 times already when most of my others I only played once.

Undertale is one of those games that inspires passion among its biggest followers. It doesn't click with everyone, but when it clicks, it clicks. Probably because there's not many games stories like Undertale out there - few games intersect lighthearted writing with dark undertones as well as it does. The game is chock-full of colorful graphics, fanciful character designs, goofy characters, and a sense of humor that doesn't take itself at all seriously...until it does. Those serious bits feel all the more impactful because of how lighthearted the rest of the game is; at some point you became invested in this silly world, and watching the pain brought to the surface is jarring.

Aside from that, the story's biggest achievement is how it makes player choice feel more impactful than perhaps any other game. Undertale does not sugarcoat or excuse the player's actions. It's also a game best played with as little knowledge of the details as possible, which the internet has spoiled for basically everyone, so...oops.

Considered to be the overall fan favorite of the MGS series, MGS3 moves away from the conspiracy pileup of MGS2 and takes a more direct, James Bond-y approach. While people appreciated the choice of the Cold War-era time period and the exploration of the origin of Big Boss, by far the most memorable moments of the game all have to do with The Boss, who might just be the most universally liked character in the series. Her conversations with Naked Snake throughout the game, culminating in the final boss fight and ending, are legendary.

Great MGS3 banner. Easily the best Metal Gear story (and game), though perhaps the most remarkable thing about it is how it illustrates how much Kojimas writing went off a cliff after Fukushima left early in MGS4s development.

Everytime I talk about how bad the FFX VA work is, people always go into immediate laughing scene defense, like they're just assuming that's the only issue people could take.

That scene was bad on purpose, the rest of the game's voice acting was not.

I still can't believe this game exists. When my friend texted me out of the blue that a Nier sequel was being developed by Platinum games, I thought they were fucking with me.

Nier 2: Electric Boogalo manages to keep the tone of the original while doing something entirely different. Nier 1's story beats were very direct, while for most of the game Automata prefers to be introspective. There's lots of robots running around and all of them don't know what to do with themselves. Philosophical navel-gazing and pondering the meaning of life is a constant throughout Automata, and a lesser game would have come across as pretentious, but the strength of the writing makes the internal struggles of the characters compelling and interesting. And when the game does go all-out and go for the direct emotional gut-punch to the player, it doesn't hold back at all, culminating in potentially the greatest ending sequence in any game.

FFX voice acting is fine. Auron and Rikku are great.

Automata is a good story. I think the first half of the game has some missteps, but the second half is pretty incredible.

If the top two are what I think they are, I'm good with it.

The culmination of the original Ace Attorney trilogy, and generally considered to be the best game in the series, it's little surprise that T&T made this list. Phoenix Wright is still our mascot after all these years. There's a lot of reasons why Trials and Tribulations is considered to be an excellent story - memorable villains, high moments, consistent quality of writing - but if I had to nail one reason down why it's the fan favorite, it would be because T&T is the conclusion of Phoenix's growth as a character, where he becomes a full-fledged lawyer in his own right. The final Objection of T&T is easily the most memorable in the series, and if this had been the final Ace Attorney game, I don't think people would have complained too much.

Oh, for sure, list was very good for the most part. It's only sliding into home that it stunk it up, but almost the entirety of it is completely solid up until this point, including stuff I don't personally care for or about.

There's been a lot of FFX discussion in the topic already so I probably don't need to make a writeup, but I will highlight that the world/setting is fantastic and one of the best-realized in any fantasy game. Out of everything about the game, I think that's what keep it in people's memories the most.

My top 3 games were all in the top 5 and I had 5 games in the top 10 (and 9 of my 10 made the list overall), so needless to say, I am satisfied with how this list played out.

When thinking of great stories, I tried to limit it to stories, not so much characters and cutscenes and stuff. Just, if I were to explain the overarching plot of the game, how good would that be. For example, Undertale probably would've been like top 3 for me if I included characters, because characters ARE Undertale. But as for story, humans oppress monsters and then a kid falls in and helps them escape their confinements. Eh, not too intriguing, been done lotsa times before.

Super fun project! I generally disagree with FFX being remotely this high but the list overall reflects such a variety of tastes, styles and genres that I don't think I can rightly complain too much.

FFX makes sense in that most people who made the list are probably around 30

so FFX , being a 2001 game, was released when most of us were somewhere around 12-15
