A New York City politician is claiming that racism not crowds gathering in large, tightly packed groups to protest the death of George Floyd would be to blame if there is a spike in coronavirus cases in the weeks ahead. Mark Levine, who is the chairman of the New York City Council Committee on Health, made the remark Wednesday despite repeatedly urging the citys residents in recent months to socially distance to prevent the spread of COVID-19, which has infected and killed more people there than any other place in the nation. Lets be clear about something: if there is a spike in coronavirus cases in the next two weeks, dont blame the protesters. Blame racism, Levine wrote on Twitter. And lets remember that the police are increasing covid risk by using tear gas, herding demonstrators into tight spaces [and] putting people in crowded jails, the Democrat added.

The comments from Levine Wednesday are a departure from some of the advice he has given to locals in recent months. In late March, Levine warned in a tweet that NYCs hospital system is about to be over run. Heres what you need to do to blunt the impact: 1. SLOW THE SPREAD by staying home. A few weeks later, while pushing for streets to be closed so New Yorkers that are outdoors could have more space to socially distance, Levine said, When people must go out, we need to give them room to spread out. And then the day before Floyd died, Levine posted on Twitter that congregating in large groups outside of bars carries a medium to high risk of catching COVID-19. The larger the group, the higher the likelihood of exposure. Wear mask except at the moment you drink. Remember close talking is believed to spread the virus, he wrote.

Imagine how much more imposing the protests would be if everyone properly socially distanced? You probably could have covered the whole city in 6' segments

the stupid decision would be going out and protesting in public and then bringing any illness back to your family.

So is your stance police can always kill innocent black men or just that's it's okay if there is pandemic? Since apparently it's stupid to protest it, just trying to get specifics so I don't have to make assumptions. Hence why I'm asking the questions and forcing you to say it to make the logical connection to why you would ever write the words it's stupid to protest innocent black men being killed by police and hitting the post new message button.

People wouldn't be protesting if one cop didn't kneel on a handcuffed man's neck until he stopped moving, and then kept it on there for another 3-4 minutes after that. This event wouldn't be escalating the way it is without the police deliberately escalating these events with planted cars to burn, leaving pallets of bricks out in the street, and warning protestors once - as opposed to 4 or 5 times to spread the message across and seeing if they'll comply - before going into full beatdown mode 10 seconds later.

George Floyd was killed for a forgery charge, because he had some funny money. He served no danger to anyone, he was beaten before he was thrown on the ground, and he was handcuffed and helpless to prevent his own death at the hands of the police. Literally all that had to happen to prevent these protests is one white cop not kneeling on a black man's neck for close to 10 minutes.

There's no-one else to blame for these continued protests but the police. It's messed up that these protests are happening in the midst of this pandemic, but there wouldn't be protests if cops weren't constantly battering protestors and calling for the National Guard to take care of things. Blame the police for the next big outbreak, because no-one except a bunch of conservative dipshits who want haircuts would be congregating like this if the police had done their jobs without murdering a non-violent offender in the street.

NYC politician: If coronavirus cases spike, blame racism, not protesters.

see how i answered a question because i have a logically consistent viewpoint.

Are you going to follow up with your logic of stating it's stupid to protest against the police murdering innocent peopl or do you want to keep sidestepping because the 'assumption' isn't an assumption, just something you aren't willing to type out and his post new message. Like you were with calling people protesting the death of an innocent man at the hands of police stupid, something that isn't the first instance of and sadly won't be the last instance of.

So what is your stance, police should be allowed to kill innocent black men anytime, police should be allowed to kill innocent black men during a viral pandemic, or people are correct to protest the death of innocent people that has been going on for decades and no amount of "training" is going to fix. And instead relies on sending a message that police unions can not continue to protect murders. That 'good' cops can't continue to allow the bad ones to do awful things.

People choosing to protest during a viral pandemic adds a whole lot of weight to their decision to speak out against the problem. As not only are you risking yourself to police brutality, of which many videos over the last weeks showcase. You're also risking yourself against a potentially deadly disease. And calling those people stupid to standup for their convictions of killing innocent people would be an absolutely horrific opinion to hold that would say a lot about your personality. And nothing it says is positive.

The reason it needs to be said is that there are already swathes of bad-faith trolls who try to compare the protesting of a systemic problem of police brutality and immunity from consequences, with Cleetus McBeetus and his trailer park pals gathering just to spite a quarantine.

Youre asking for people to keep things in perspective, so I hope you will do the same.

A lot of people, though not all, who wanted to reopen businesses and discontinue the lockdown were not trolling. They were legitimately concerned about how they were going to keep from being evicted from their homes and how they would feed their families. Many others said they were just stupid, selfish and must have hated old people and health-compromised individuals. I didnt like the idea of breaking quarantine, but I sympathized with their concerns. Even those Cleetus types who went out with firearms, caused a lot of noise and pissed off the rest of us at home, but they were not burning down cities, IIRC.

No. The vast majority of protestors were just upset the government was telling them what to do.

If the protesters cared that deeply about the system that made the lockdown so devastating, theyd have addressed it from that angle.

instead it was a bunch of right wing loonies who wanted to do whatever they wanted, but to this day will fight against any change that might make a future lockdown (heaven forbid we see anything like this soon) would be less taxing to the economy/infrastructure.

no doubt there were sincere people who just wanted to make ends meet. But that is not what the protests were about.

Lol, the first time around it was Cuomo and Blasio's fault. This time around it will definitely be the people.

I'm for the protests and have even wanted to go, but the virus never went anywhere and in fact, it does actually discriminate. The people most affected are black and Hispanic people because of prior problems. This has been a fact.

This weird justice>lives>economy is such a weird and ignorant flip flop, especially somewhere like NYC. I mean, it's like the 30k people that passed for no reason in 3 months and us pausing the whole economy to deal with this just never meant anything.
