You know, I think the best sign I've seen a protester hold up so far said something like this:

Not all black people are criminals.
Not all white people are racists.
Not all police officers are corrupt.
We are stronger together.

Some great stories of unity are coming out of these protests this past weekend. Take Flint, Michigan, where the chief of police put down his gear and baton and marched with the protesters down the street in unity. Take the community near where I live, where similarly the police joined the protesters, listened to their complaints, and discussed paths of understanding and moving forward. There was no looting done in those areas. There was no police brutality in those areas. No violent riots. One can hope there was a step toward healing, but time will tell.

The media loves drama though, as do social media posters, so those stories take a back seat to the more violent confrontations going on in this country, where police and protesters lose their cool and lash out in violence. The videos are damning. Police are lashing out in very irresponsible and daresay criminally negligent ways, making matters worse by assaulting people who aren't even being aggressive. Yet, I guarantee you on some right-wing message board somewhere, they are sharing videos of rioters looting, beating up store owners, etc., and having a big old circle jerk on how these protesters are animals and out of control. Very similar to the way you guys are going at it with the police videos.

In many of these videos, it's like each side is antagonizing the other, just waiting for them to overreact to something so they can catch it on camera. We see cops assaulting people who aren't doing anything wrong. We see protesters antagonizing and egging on cops to react in some way. What does that solve? How does that fix the problem we have in this country? All it's doing is creating a bigger divide. Nothing good can come out of that.

It's easy to get caught up in all the violent confrontations, I admit I did as well. It's just so destructive to the issue at hand. It's reinforcing the stereotypes both sides have on one another. I think it's important to take a deep breathe and remember that not all cops are violent like this, not all protesters are violent like this. Some communities did this the right way, and they sure as hell have a better chance of healing than these places of conflict do.

Almost every single case over the last week of a "peaceful" police photoop was revealed to be a publicity stunt in which they immediately began assaulting protestors that same evening.

But yeah.

Cop drawing gun after somebody tried to kill somebody with a brick is fair.

But you know what isn't?

The other hundreds of unprovoked actions by police.
I don't think I've seen a single situation that was truly "unprovoked". Some of the responses are definitely too much, but when people are burning buildings and throwing shit at the police, it's only fair to respond with tear gas and rubber bullets.

It's possible to agree with the spirit of the protest while not condoning the looting and needless violence......

Peaceful protests and civil disobedience work, just ask MLK. Breaking the front window of a Target and stealing a TV doesn't serve any positive purpose whatsoever

I think these protests will make race relations even worse. When I see these athletes posting SJW crap on social media, basically using the tragedy to try to gain brownie points and clout... I get really mad.

Like I saw a soccer player score a goal and then take off his shirt with the shirt underneath saying "Justice for George Floyd". Made me want to puke.

Then you clearly haven't looked very hard, since there have been dozens of videos even of just cops attacking reporters for literally no reason. Hell, there's one where a reporter was on the ground and holding his press badge above his head and a cop walked over and sprayed him in the face with pepper spray anyway despite there being no danger whatsoever.

This is true of basically everyone "chiming in". As long as the victim is some unknown small business owner, or a faceless corporation, or the minimum wage employees of that faceless corporation, people don't give a shit about the long term damage they are doing.

And the part in all of this that's being completely forgotten is that there's an active pandemic happening at the moment. These rioters are going to directly cause the next big spike in Covid-19 cases.

Maybe? It probably comes across as racist but... I think the way celebrities are trying to lecture people on how to think and act is wrong. Why was this issue basically forgotten about on May 24, the day before George Floyd's death? Where was the awareness/activism on this issue before Floyd died? Between 2017- May 24 2020 there was little to no discussion on the topic.

The absolute worst part of this, is that the root issue (over militarized, under regulated cops with a godlike corrupt union backing them up) is being lost behind the racism argument. If these protesters had a clear aim, such as scrapping police unions, or putting in sane gun regulations like the entire rest of the world has, I would be more on board with it. As it stands, I'm still not quite sure what their goal is, since their actions are only going to increase racial tensions.

In the 3 year period, from Jan 2017-May 24 2020, they were not discussing the issue of police brutality against black men much any more.

Yea I agree with BT, I think these lootings/general chaos is going to make race relations worse and increase racism. On where I disagree with BT, "having a dialog" ain't gonna do anything. Racism is not that easy to exterminate. I'm honestly not sure if it can ever be removed from society.

Let me say as I've always said, and I will always continue to say, that riots are socially destructive and self-defeating. ... But in the final analysis, a riot is the language of the unheard. And what is it that America has failed to hear? It has failed to hear that the plight of the Negro poor has worsened over the last few years. It has failed to hear that the promises of freedom and justice have not been met. And it has failed to hear that large segments of white society are more concerned about tranquility and the status quo than about justice, equality, and humanity. And so in a real sense our nation's summers of riots are caused by our nation's winters of delay. And as long as America postpones justice, we stand in the position of having these recurrences of violence and riots over and over again.

since we're quotin' MLK in here, here's an evergreen that speaks to exactly why we're still here in 2020

but hey if you just wanna quote MLK to silence black voices in their struggle then here's another one for ya:

First, I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season." Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.

I had hoped that the white moderate would understand that law and order exist for the purpose of establishing justice and that when they fail in this purpose they become the dangerously structured dams that block the flow of social progress. I had hoped that the white moderate would understand that the present tension in the South is a necessary phase of the transition from an obnoxious negative peace, in which the Negro passively accepted his unjust plight, to a substantive and positive peace, in which all men will respect the dignity and worth of human personality. Actually, we who engage in nonviolent direct action are not the creators of tension. We merely bring to the surface the hidden tension that is already alive. We bring it out in the open, where it can be seen and dealt with. Like a boil that can never be cured so long as it is covered up but must be opened with all its ugliness to the natural medicines of air and light, injustice must be exposed, with all the tension its exposure creates, to the light of human conscience and the air of national opinion before it can be cured.

even got BT pegged on his tension shit, amazing how well the King's words hold for over half a century

If these protesters had a clear aim, such as scrapping police unions, or putting in sane gun regulations like the entire rest of the world has, I would be more on board with it. As it stands, I'm still not quite sure what their goal is, since their actions are only going to increase racial tensions.
I dunno, "stop killing innocent black people" sounds like a pretty understandable request to me.

BT is right, the protestors are not organized and do not have a legitimate plan to solve racism in the USA. Because there is no solution, the protestors are in the wrong. Their plan is to "raise awareness" but no one knows how or if that can be measured.

Almost every single case over the last week of a "peaceful" police photoop was revealed to be a publicity stunt in which they immediately began assaulting protestors that same evening.

But yeah.
