Fullmetal Alchemist is a safe rec without knowing anything about what you like or what you're looking for in a manga.

I'd recommend Death Note above anything else.

I'm not saying it's the best manga ever, but it's a must read. Cultural impact, good length, and subjectively it's very good.

I'll second this. It's a series that's been going since the 60s with a ton of reboots, but their are plenty of great places to just jump in no problem.

Robot Keiji
A robot detective and his human partner solve a criminal conspiracy. Short but bittersweet. 2 Volumes

MARS
Bit of a kick in the teeth, but a good story about a kid experiencing mankind. 5 Volumes

Ryuu no Michi
Young man returns from space to find Earth is not as he knew it, forges a path for himself and others to survive. Artwork is perhaps Ishinomori at his best. 8 Volumes.

Giant Robo
Giant robot beating on crooks and other robots, only version where his controller isn't a kid not that there's anything wrong with that. 2 Volumes.

There's this scene in like season 2 of the Sopranos when Tony talks with another guy about how "they're both young men" (James Gandolfini was right around 40-41 at the time) and I think I violently laughed at it when I was 18/19 years old when I first watched that scene. A few years later - yeah, I get it.

Rurouni Kenshin: Classic action series. Not too long, and easy to get into.

Eyeshield 21: One of my favorite sports manga. Helps if you can at least occasionally enjoy watching a(n American) football game though.

Ushio to Tora: Bit of a more epic and long series. Also an older style of drawing, but still easy to enjoy and builds up to an amazing ending.

Bartender: Fun and relaxing series that is more episodic. Focuses on, well, a bartender.

Angel Densetsu: My favorite comedy manga. Art is a bit rough in the beginning, but does improve early in. Also a nice short read.

Also seconding Pluto: A great sci-fi/noir take on one of the older classics.

Prison School. The first half is really really funny. But the 2nd half is awful >_> Just read the first half.

Useless Ponko:
Set in the future in a quiet seaside town it's a story about an old man who lost his wife and just wants to spend the last of his days in peace. His children are worried about him and send him a housekeeper; An old model robotic maid. It's adorable.

Jahy-sama won't be discouraged:
Jahy (Jah-Hee) is the demon realm's number two, until something happens and the demon realm is destroyed, now she has to regain her powers and restore the demon lord. But first she's got to make a living working as a waitress living in a shitty one bedroom house.

The Rising of The Shield Hero:
Naofumi is sent to another world though a book where he takes on the role of the Shield Hero. Now he and three other heroes must fight off waves of ever stronger monsters to save the world. He soon finds that not everyone is who they say they are and he will have to overcome serious challenges beyond just the monsters.

Zetman: A dark interweaving story of a child born in poverty and a child born into wealth who take very different paths to become "heroes"

Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer: A strange action series with a heavy emphasis on character development

Pokemon Adventures: I don't even care if you like Pokemon or not, it's just a really solid adventure series.

Silver Spoon: Slice of Life Comedy series about a boy who's used to living in a large urban city, and decides to attend an agricultural school partly to get away from his highly critical father (who surprisingly turned out to be my favorite character due to a running gag later in the manga), and partly because he believes it'll be easy due to his intelligence. He frequently makes a fool of himself early on because he didn't expect the agriculture life to actually be difficult. It's also surprisingly informative, given that the author actually grew up on a dairy farm.

I'll be 30 next month and I have kids, so not a typical manga reader. Anyway I finished reading Goodnight Punpun this year and it was heartbreaking and brilliant. Depressing story about a young boy going through life and for some reason him and his family are depicted as little birds when everyone else is human.

Other than that I've liked some Junji Ito stuff. Planning on buying a Revolutionary Girl Utena boxset when it's back in stock

I love Punpun and would have recommended it, but I'm not sure if the **** I felt for it as a sad 20 year old(back when I read it) would hit the same for someone in their 30s.
