These games always go the same way, lol.

-Hey this is cool, there are lots of cool ideas here.
-Man this game was way ahead of its time, check out the cool story setup.
-Oh man all the enemies are fully animated, Final Fantasies in these generations just had one sprite apiece.
-Alright, kindy grindy start but hey I made it to a new town.
-Well ok it's pretty much like the last town. But whatever. Now where to?
-Ok cool a dungeon. Took a few trips back to town but hey.
-Um this dungeon looks just like the last one but with a slightly different maze.
-Are there any bosses in this game?
-Hey look another identical dungeon except this one takes a lot longer.
-Yep more identical dungeons, did this game really need all this padding?
-Oh hey a boss, some story advancement and now some things have changed up a bit.
-Man these dungeons are really getting on my nerves.
-When is this game going to end already?
-Ugh
-UUUUGH

I'm convinced people remember phantasy start fondly for the dreamcast/gamecube phantasy star online rather than the original games, while amazing music and all they seemed really basic.

Either that or nostalgia as usual.

They were among the pioneers of console JRPGs, though. Just look at the release date(s) for the first game of each series.

Not gonna' lie.....all my love for phantasy star comes from phantasy star online/episode 1 and 2, which is my favorite game of all time. Phantasy star universe to a lesser extent.

The only classic one I cared for was part 4 because of the cool comic book panels. Will give credit to part 1 for having a female lead in a time when that was extremely rare.

Phantasy Star 1 is an absolute, certified, classic and I love it! On the other hand, I totally love retro RPGs in spite of the inherent grindiness and repetition.

Phantasy Star 2, though, can suck a fat egg. In terms of game/level design it's literally a downgrade from its predecessor in every way, barring a handful of QoL fixes. >_>

I never got very far into it but I had phantasy star 3 on genesis back in the day. Technically it was my brother's game. But it featured multiple generations in the story which was pretty groundbreaking for the time. Even today most rpgs don't do that. You played as several people all descendents of each other as the story covered several lifetimes in the saga of one family I think

I'd say it's more Phantasy Star IV that most people played and loved.

So this one is pretty much an adventure game with an RPG minigame that pops up from time to time.

I always liked adventure games, so I'm cool with this.

Phantasy star 4 is a genuinely good game that anyone that's a fan of classic RPG's should play

Yep.

Outside of a somewhat high encounter rate, the game has aged pretty well.

Yeah 4 was p good.

Didn't blow me away or anything but it was definitely the best overall of the three I've already finished.

To be honest overall I liked the story of Phantasy Star 3 more than 4. I had that collection game on GBA that had all 4 of them, and I played through them all a long time ago.
