yeah, fuck human advancement. it should come to a grinding halt every time we have any sort of crisis.

Advancing for advancement's sake shouldn't take priority over advancing for the purpose of solving existing problems, though. You get some tangential benefits from NASA's work, sure, so dismisisng it entirely is dumb, but prioritizing "maybe this will be useful somewhere down the road" over "this will definitely be useful right now" is similarly so.

The challenger happened when I was 8, of course I remember. Until we stop wasting resources on earth, stop having wars and homelessness, and stop polluting needlessly, we should forget about outer space. Most of us haven't even conquered our inner spaces.

Sunny you are legitimately fucking dumb.

Than yourself? Sunny, you're one of the biggest assholes on this board and the funniest part about you is you somehow think you're shitting out rainbows and sunshine.

But okay, because we have problems in the country lets not bother with furthering mankind. Instead we'll focus on our problems because the scientific advancement of all of human kind really doesn't do anything right? It's not like we've had hundreds of breakthroughs and invention as a direct result of the need/desire for space travel? But no, lets divert the .4% of the 4.5 trillion dollar budget of the US to ya know, fix racism or something. I'd say maybe we should divert it to vaccines but we all know you don't believe in that.

well, monumental just means something like big, or significant, and we're talking about putting humans in orbit using 21st century tech. not to mention other details like this being the first successful commercial launch of a crewed spacecraft in the history of humanity.

this literally pushes the boundary of human achievement. what more do you want?

So to be clear:

  1. We're launching using technology made in 2020, as opposed to in the past when we didn't use 2020 technology, despite it functionally doing the same thing.
  2. It was paid for by a guy that has enough money to do this, instead of being a public program.
Yeah, I expect something more. Like an outcome other than "get astronaut to space".

basically, you don't just attain each step once and treat it as done. you refine each step over and over and over until its as close to perfect as it can be.

It's as perfect as it can be for orbiting earth, we got that down over half a century ago.

Show me what gain has been made that's worth noticing. Designer space suits? Fuel efficiency that hasn't been demonstrated on a rocket with enough delta-v to do anything new?

Nothing new has been proved, it's just there to go "Look, we're trying, honest!".

aren't you a physics teacher? I guess you're not an engineer so you don't get it, or you're being willfully disinterested? (probably the latter)

as extreme examples, just because the wright brothers can fly a wooden airplane doesn't mean we can build a 747. just because we can build a canoe doesn't mean we can build a cruise ship.

"functionally the same" depends on the level of detail with which you're viewing things. "get astronaut to space" is a pretty frigging ignorant way of looking at it.

to call this not-significant kind of implies you have an underlying political agenda guiding that attitude.

this is something that has never been done before... ever. in more ways than one.

so... you're saying that pre-1970 space tech cannot and has not been improved upon in any way whatsoever...? seriously?

I acknowledge that. It's just not that interesting.

Call me when Ol Musky establishes a permanent lunar base. Or when we land humans on Mars. Or when we design a rover that can survive indefinitely on Venus.

This launch is a small step for both man and mankind. It's a step forward. Not much more as far as I can tell. I need convincing, and nothing I've read or watched has convinced me.

And no, lol, I have no political motives on this.

Not in a way that matters. It's more refined, not more capable, which is disappointing. They can do more, but this is not proving it, it's just pissing about in space.

well that's just subjective. I happen to find it exceedingly interesting. but the degree of interest you happen to have or not have doesn't make it objectively more or less important.

even if this _wasn't_ a step forward, and we only just regained our exact same position after losing it ~10 years ago, this would still be a critical milestone.
