Its just a rumor that keeps circulating because its very easy to spread, because its never been confirmed or debunked, and its also a foreign movie. There's less information available about the film's production than there are variations on the same unverified rumors, to English language readers, and the same goes for its filmmakers, which should set off some alarms. The only information I can really find about the director is on the Wikipedia article, which turns up nothing, and a post from some website called Worldhop Journals dealing with the authors' visit to his island (he is a renowned zoologist and essayist), which is glowing with regards to his nature, and mentions the movie only in passing. I think this story deserves some skepticism. 1954's Animal Farm is a pretty messed up kids' cartoon. Its definitely somewhat Disney-fied in some respects (and weirdly enough, not in others - the song from the novel is sung in animal noises, not in words!), but the edges it retains from the source material are fucking sharp. --- Isn't Steppenwolf a rock band?
