I think a key difference is how the gaming industry has built itself up as an event-based one.

Take away the pressure of having to bring maximum hype to an event like E3 or Pax and I think you would see less of an emphasis on having trailers for games that are years away.

The exception being on years with a new console launch, where developers are still going to be incentivized to show off stuff that might be years away to push consoles.

I think the solution is just longer development periods instead of like, 2.5-3 years. Games should be in development for around 4-5 years if necessary and devs should avoid feature creep. If they can't finish the game in the targeted window, then oh well. None of this unpaid overtime, 100 hours a work week business.

It really depends on the developers.

Treyarch had 3 full years to work on their last CoD and we got the rushed fuckfest that was Black Ops 4. Granted, they kinda had to dial back a lot of the original elements and scrap the campaign because it had forced co-op that couldn't be finished, but they should've considered all of that during the initial development in the first place.

In comparison, IW had 3 years to work on Modern Warfare and we got a new engine, a full campaign, a non-rushed multiplayer, with 64 players max instead of just 10/12 from Black Ops 4, co-op, and battle royale all during that time. I'm sure there was some crunch, but most importantly the initial game didn't feel rushed whatsoever.
