The entire wedding industry is a total scam.

Example: wedding venues not advertising their price. My wife and I were looking for a venue and 9/10 of them didn't have a price indicated and wouldn't tell us until we did their tour. Even after telling them our budget, almost all of them came in way the fuck over it with the same bullshit line "now I know this is a bit over your budget, but for such a special occasion can you really put a price tag on it?" or some variation of it

To which I always replied that signing their contract wouldn't make the extra money magically appear in my account.

Then other ones where the price came in under our budget and then when they drew up the contract and sent it over they added a 25-30% venue fee, adding thousands of dollars to the bill.

Curse all the rich parents forking over tens of thousands of dollars for a 12 hour party making everyone think it's okay to charge those rates.

If this was as simple as payment wasnt received for a service provided then yeah lick all the business boots you want. But it wasnt at all that simple. This company was the only one not to refund the widowed fianc. They bought a domain name of the husband to troll him. They trolled him about his dead wife on the wedding day itself. They faked a suicide from someone who died two years ago to gain sympathy. Its possible that person never even worked for the company. The company had also threatened a defamation lawsuit against the dead wifes mother. In addition to all this it seems like the prick that owns the place also has problems paying employees and has been scamming people for ten years.

Fuck this ass hole and his company. If there was ever a company that deserved to go under its this one.

The company did significantly more damage to themselves by how they handled this. Registering a domain name in the groom's name was incredibly stupid as was everything they put on that site.

The smart(er) business move (wait this is still a bad idea, but lol) would have been to say sorry no refund then make no further comment. Then they could possibly have some people defend them, but lol probs not many.

Basically, not giving the refund was a super short sighted business decision that will likely cost way more than giving a refund would.

Just because it's a policy that's been adopted throughout the industry doesn't make it a good policy. It should be criminal. Basically you're putting money to reserve a service and if literally anything comes up (including death) you forfeit your deposit and the company keeps all funds even though they didn't provide any service whatsoever. There is such thing as bad policies and this is one of them.

Especially with a videography company where their service is on the day of the wedding. They shouldn't demand a deposit at all and should receive payment the day of or after the video has been produced.

Sorry, telling the internet that a company refused a refund is not "trying to ruin" the company. Consumers absolutely have a right to share their experiences and companies aren't entitled to positive reactions to unpopular actions, regardless of the written "policy." The widower did nothing wrong, while the scam artist running the "company" went on a smear campaign and deliberately taunted a grieving family.
