A Manhattan DA candidate shared her opinion on the matter Monday after the video was shared online, and vowed to make sure Christian would not become yet another victim of the criminal justice system that had been criticized for disfavoring poor black Americans.

'This is serious. Happened today in Manhattan. As a public defender for over a decade, I have tried cases where the Manhattan DA uses a "hysterical 911 call" as categorical evidence of guilt. Usually there's no video like this to refute it,' Elisa Orlins explained.

'What happens: White lady calls the cops on Black man. Cops believe her. He gets arrested and then arraigned. Outrageous bail gets set. His family cannot afford to buy his freedom. He gets sent to Rikers Island, where he sits for any number of days, months, or years.

'Eventually the case resolves in some way--gets dismissed or he takes a plea to the charge or a lesser offense to get out because he's threatened with doing serious time. Meanwhile, he's potentially lost his job, his home, his children. Right now, it is even worse.

'People are sitting on Rikers Island on the basis of nothing more than an accusation (like in this video!) with the added risk of contracting COVID-19. So, we can call out these Karens," but also we need a Manhattan DA who is committed to real reform. I will be that DA.'

Karen apologized

https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/26/us/central-park-video-dog-video-african-american-trnd/index.html

Christian Cooper, who described himself as an avid bird-watcher, was out birding between 7:30 a.m. and 8 a.m. Monday in the Ramble, a section of Central Park full of winding paths and thick greenery that attracts over 230 bird species.

That's when he says he saw a dog off its leash.
"That's important to us birders because we know that dogs won't be off leash at all and we can go there to see the ground-dwelling birds," Christian Cooper said. "People spend a lot of money and time planting in those areas as well. Nothing grows in a dog run for a reason."

"He was running in an open field. This man, he was bird-watching. He came out of the bush," she said, adding that Christian Cooper was screaming at her.
Christian Cooper said the dog was "tearing through the plantings," and he told Amy Cooper the dog needed to be on a leash. He said he was not screaming at Amy Cooper, and "was actually pretty calm."
The two went back-and-forth about the dog leash. Christian Cooper, according to his Facebook post, then told her: "Look, if you're going to do what you want, I'm going to do what I want, but you're not going to like it."

@marc55

To be fair, you can't make phony calls.

She's far from in the right but she can claim she felt she wanted a police officer on site and it still not fall under abuse of a 911 call.

Even if it's not an actual emergency, you can still call 911 without consequence if you believe it is an emergency, regardless of your racist intentions or not.

She deserves all the punishment she can get but you have to be careful with what you classify as fake 911 calls

Bruh, it is blindingly obvious to anyone not blowing a dog whistle that this woman was threatening the man's life. The way she shrieked and kept repeating "African American man" (we all know what word she really wanted to say) were blatant. She was basically trying to call in a hit on this man.

I can almost gaureentee she didn't feel as though she was in danger.

She was just pissed off cause he called her out on her dog not being on a leash, and she thought "I'll show you! Thinking you can call me out! Hmph!".

I could be wrong, but I bet that's what it was

Yepper.

Race most likely played an element too. As in she was prolly like "ain't no black man gonna tell me what to do! I'll show him! Get the cops down here. They'll side with me!".

It was purely vindictive. You can tell she's pissed off with the zero regard she's giving that poor dog. It's like she's choking it out the longer it goes on. Glad they took the dog from her.

No, she and other pieces of shit like this absolutely should. This is society's way of telling such shitstains their behavior is unacceptable. We're going through a societal paradigm shift where power is shifting from elitist assholes like this and into the hands of the common folk. She literally tried to emphasize that an "African American man" was threatening her. Any attempt to frame her actions other than as absolutely reprehensible and unreasonable are flat out wrong. She deserves everything she is getting. If the justice system will not punish people for doing shit like this then they at least should have to deal the consequences of their actions socially.

It shouldn't haunt someone for rest of their life, barring they haven't ruthlessly murdered an innocent person. As soon as you cross that line, it's over for you imo.

Racism is terrible and so is being an asshole, but neither are incurable diseases.

Given the chance to improve, people can, will and do rehabilitate. I would hope that's what people want. That is to say, i would hope people would want others to do better and be better, not be forever buried and crushed by what they've done (above example of murder withstanding).

I'm not saying don't punish people, as you need consequences for actions. No one would learn otherwise. But it doesn't have to be overkill, and still following you 20 years from now.

when he sees somebody robbing a 7-11 or vandalizing a building does he wonder if these guys will face the consequences of their actions for the rest of their lives? No? Why do it know? Hmmmm

Armed robery is different than an altercation in a park that ultimately leads to nothing violent happening to another human.

Also, you don't know me or my thoughts. I often stick up for youths committing petty crimes, regardless of skin tone, as they are young and stupid.

As long as a person doesn't commit something truly reprehinsable, like murder, I believe in rehabilitation.

It's not going to really change her deep down. Maybe it will, but the most likely effect is that she will probably just hide it better.

Losing the dog, work leave without pay and mandatory counciling on her dime to deal with the anger, privilege and racial issues she is harboring.

I think it should be that way regarding anyone who exibits this behavior. If someone actually gets hurt, then jail time.

I haven't been following this too closely, but why was her dog returned? Did she make that decision on her own or was she forced to turn in her dog?

i don't think that's known. but the shelter did make a statement suggesting they reached out to her, not the other way around.

This one was weird too. Like she low key wanted the D towards the end.

I'd want a little more context on that one tbh. Like if I'm going out thru an electronically gated door and someone I don't know is trying to get in then I would absolutely not want them getting in. If someone buzzes them in or they have their own swipe then she's ridiculously in the wrong and that was pure harassment. Her trying to save face at then end by being a "concerned neighbor" was fucking pure PR though

The fact that you think a black shouldn't have a problem with proving he belongs there is asinine tbh.
