You always hear of people joining the Marines. But is there a standard level, cannon fodder meat shield soldier tier that people can join?

I don't know about "elite" but I think they are generally more focused on fighting and front line combat than other branches. I think their bootcamp and physical standards are tougher than say, the Army.

They are always the "first to fight" as in the first sent into combat, or so I've heard.

Not mutually exclusive.

They are considered the toughest of all the branches, but within the military theyre also considered bullet sponges.

That said, there are all kinds of career fields in all branches, but generally the Marines focus more on boots-on-the-ground war fighting. Even if your career field is something like comm or intel, from what Ive heard, they consider you a grunt first.

the most elite military units in the US are supposed to be: Seal Team 6, which is a part of the Navy, Delta Force, which is a part of the Army, and the Green Berets, which are also part of the Army, iirc.

I could be wrong, though, but each military branch has their own special forces.

Marines have MARSOC, or Raiders that are the Marine Corps equivalent to SEALs, Delta Force, etc etc.

Based on training alone, I would rank them at 3rd overall in the world, at least from the ones I've heard of. The Spetsnaz in Russia are known for their extremely harsh training, as are the Israeli special forces. Anyone who thinks they are number 1 are mistaken. They are extremely tough and I would never want to anger any of them, but the other 2 are on an entirely different level due to the lack of compassion their militia shows to weaklings, and the intensity of the training given. I wouldn't put it against either of the top 2 to use brainwashing techniques or extreme methods to toughen their so called "warriors".

As for entering the marines, anyone could probably enter, though you'd have an easier time if you start with a branch like the Army or Navy first. You can certainly enter, but your starting from rock bottom first, and it may take many many years to even get to the next level, if you get to the next level.

Seals usually considered elite by civilians purely because they like to show off. Delta Force on the other hand don't normally brag about their service. In other words Delta Team is more professional.

Lol why would you say this?

Prior military training gets you ready for a harder regiment. It's the same with any job really. If you start from the bottom in one job, you can enter similar jobs at a higher level as you accumulate experience. If you just plainly enter the marines, you can prosper, but your not going to have as easy of a job of it as someone entering from another branch of the military.

Someone entering just the Marines will take years to get to get the discipline and knowledge to progress further, compared to say.... someone who was in a position in the army for many years used to some form of training.

It's not to say you can't do it. You certainly can, there are exceptions to every rule. If I were to make a comparison to something I'm slightly familiar with, video games. You can immediately go out and play Touhou, one of the harder bullet hell games out there, but you'd have a better chance at success if you had some experience with games like Raiden or Jamestown.

I meant more like why would you ever say it may take many many years to get to the next level, if you get to the next level.

I dont think you understand how ranking works in the US military. You are E2 out of basic assuming you dont fuck up really hard, for every branch. You should be E4-E5 by the end of your first enlistment, from there things slow down but not before.

You also seem to think marines are special forces... which isnt correct. Every branch has different jobs, and different schools to go to, depending on what you enjoy and what type of job you want and your asvab scores youd do a bit of homework and figure out where to go. The navy has the best firefighting program for example, go airforce if you dont like sleeping in dirt and dont mind two mandatory showers a day or you want a medical type job (corpsman in the navy is also good), pick infantry in the marines if you wanna see combat, etc. being a cook in the army or navy isnt gonna help you be a better cook in the marines lol.

Raiders, SEALs, and Green Berets are elite. But even they have higher tier units that are even more elite, like CAG/Delta and DEVGRU/SEAL Team Six.

Then theres even higher tier units than those that recruit guys from Delta/ST6, like the CIAs Special Activities Division or whatever the hell they call it these days.

The marines have elite units like the other branches as others have said and they have the toughest training out of the main 4 branches of Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines.

People are using elite in different ways here.

The military has its special forces as elite units and even the Marines have their own elite, specially trained members. But the Marines, in general, are also considered elite because they have a history of accomplishing their missions rapidly and without much logistics, at least compared to other branches of service.

They was our infantry until they had a split and formed their own branch. It doesn't make much sense since they still relie on navy vehicles for transport. Even dumber is we often do expeditionary either with them or seal teams, so joint operations are common.

From my understanding is that the Army is a mobilized and occupation force, has Air Force as support.

Marines are a invasion force or foot soldiers of the Navy and carried their gear on their backs.

As far as WW2 goes anyway.

Its as easy to join the marines as the army, they arent elite they just do different things.

The only real difference is what they do, marines are mobilized quickly to address a crisis where as the army is used for more long term occupations.

So like when we invaded Iraq the marines go in first and the army stuck around to keep the peace.

p. sure Marine boot camp is a lot tougher than Air Force and Navy, at least. We certainly don't run around stabbing things with bayonets yelling "KILL KILL KILL KILL". And our capstone graduation requirement is staying awake for 24 hours straight, 8 of which is like overnight roleplaying onboard a realistic mock-up of a ship. Definitely nothing like what the Army or Marines go through.
