tbh after getting back into fighting games. I was getting bodied for like my first 300 matches was 12-19% win rate that whole time.. Now have around 800 under my belt and my win percentage in now around 41%. 53%ish for the past 100 lol

one thing i don't get about fighting games - once i start a combo, is there ever a reason to not do the same combo every time? it seems to me like there's an objective best combo for each starting move

only tekken. 2d fighting games are too simple. haven't found a good looking one either.

Aside from doa which you will get countered there are optimal combos. Of course in older games combos can be dropped by players who arent pros. 1 frame links exist. Even pros can drop those.

so easier combos vs hard combos are a thing

thank you.

but wouldn't that mean that when you watch one character at the highest level of play, you see the same few combos every time?

Depends on the match up

tekken has the most combo variants i've seen. depends on the spacing of the stage relative to the wall. and if no wall then wakeup setups which is called "okizeme"

then some people who play the same character have their own personal combos and flow charts due to the massive movelists of tekken and positioning of the characters in the 3d environment. its really cool to watch the tournaments and see the personalities of the players expressed in the fighters.

No. Different characters have different hurtboxes so optimal combos can vary. Also, combos may drop if not done at a specific range/height or you may need a counterhit to start it. Plus theres always the question of if you want to go for max damage or set up a reset or have a good oki on wake up.

BTW Tekken is far from the only game where spacing matters lol

Lets be real-they are highly technical and a lot of work to get good at. But the payoff can be worth it. I'm thinking the skills that are learned here can be translated to action games or action RPGs as well.

I'm learning fighting game fundamentals at present in the Injustice 2 tutorial modes. Learned about: cancels, wake-ups and cross-ups yesterday. Cancels were especially tough. Cross-ups seem like they'd be good for dealing with defensive opponents on the AI.

Skullgirls can be an absolute mess to learn and you will get your shit pushed in if you're unfamiliar with the reset heavy meta.

Skullgirls is such a good-looking game. I love the art style, animations and all the detail they put into it.

It is several years old now, so Id agree that it would be a daunting task to start as a beginner and play against veterans.

I like playing them and can do the less complication commands and combos, but I tend to suck at them because I don't have the patience to lab for hours on end. Plus, a lot of them do suffer from a lack of content.

Weather I like a fighter or not depends on the games learning curve honestly. I played blazblue for years but never got good at the game and even if I did I didnt have the execution needed to use even half the roster.. Eventually I had to accept I wasn't having fun and moved on.

old fighting games are good

new fighting games are shit. the CPU is dumb as rocks and in order to compete online i gotta spend 100+ hours a week in practice mode memorizing frame perfect juggle combos and other garbage inputs against hundreds of different possible matchups doing thousands of different types of moves

fuck that gimme UMK3 or SF2 anyday

Poor reflexes.

Couldn't really get the hang of getting the commands right no matter how many times I try.

Due to not having enough time to git gud, PvP in any genre absolutely stresses me out. I feel I'm having more fun when doing PvE or co-op PvE.

I enjoy watching them though.

Nobody asks questions to understand. Not on the internet, at least.

I can see the appeal back in the arcade days or the 90s/early 2000s consoles era when all multiplayer was in person and it felt more competitive. But Im not gonna take the time to learn all the combos for a fighting game just to engage in internet battles.

This. To say something like theres no replayability is stupid as hell since thats their main strength. There are so many variables in fighters that chances are youll never see the same match twice. But in most other genres youll be going through the same stages, with the same story, with the same characters.

No friends to play with, bad netcode, and very rarely is there crossplay (especially bad for us PC players)

oh don't get me wrong it's still my favorite genre
