I love fighting games. They have so much replay value with so little content. I played Jump Ultimate Stars for 7 years until Nintendo shut down the DS servers. I'll literally never touch any non-training mode single player stuff in fighters unless it's required to unlock things I want lol.

Although I mainly like combo-heavy anime-style fighters like MvC, TvC, BBTAG, etc. I tend to be good at those, and it's satisfying to land some 30 second combo on someone. Granted I know they're not for everyone. I imagine it's not fun for the victim of that combo, stuck watching yourself die helplessly. Even more so when I'm doing impractical troll combos as those are more to deal damage to the ego than the life bar lol. Like this :3 (although this did good damage to both the life bar and ego lol)

I swear to God every Noel player online only knows how to mash Drive, even when they get repeatedly punished for it :<

They're fine. A friend got me into MK11 and the last fighting games I played were Street Fighter 2 and MK3. I was into it a good bit for a while. I just fight the computer though. I suck to much and I'm too sensitive to get repeatedly beaten by other players.

it always baffles me that fighting game communities even exist

not that i don't like them, it's just i literally don't know anybody irl who plays fighting games, other than smash

I think youd be surprised how big a community you could build, if you consistently advertised (for free on social media, of course) that youre hosting a tournament or even just a casual get-together.

I prefer to play many different games rather than invest the time necessary to become great at one. As such, I'm usually not very interested in highly competitive games such as fighting games, real-time strategy or online shooters.

I might enjoy the single player mode but unless I got some friends who are also interested in the game and we can compete (terribly) against each others, I will then move on to something else.

Back in high school, I used to play a lot of Soul Calibur with some friends. We were no doubt horrible by tournament standards but it was fun and we were improving together.

I liked them and used to play them a lot more. Nowadays I don't play them because I have no one to play them with. Online fighting games always frustrated me because of how the lag interfered more than with any other video game genre.

I like them I'm just bad at them so I quickly get turned off playing online, I like playing with people IRL who are more on my level. I don't think I have good enough coordination and reflexes to get decent at them.

One, I'm bad at them. Not just bad. Absolutely mind-boggling bad. If I can beat you at any fighting game that isn't Street Fighter 2, TMNT Tournament Fighter or Smash, then you should probably just give up playing fighting games, period. I exempt those three categories just because I spent 'some' time on them and thus know enough of the move list to last more than 10 seconds so there might be a chance of a fluke victory, like 1 time out of a 50+.

Two, there's nobody to play with. There are no IRL people to play games with around me(except my brother, who doesn't give a damn about fighting games), and you can't pay me to play games online(not just for fighting games). Putting that in mind, there's really no reason for me to play fighting games in the first place considering the entire point of the genre is duking with other human players.

Three, the genre just doesn't appeal to me. Two guys/girls/robots/whatevers beating the crap out of each other? Ehhh... There are lots of more interesting stuff.

TMNT Tournament Fighter

Man, for being a SF2 rip off, that game was so much fun. The music is killer as well. I'll still play it every know and again.

And like what a few of you said, it's much more fun playing with someone right there with you. To me it's more fun even if I'm getting absolutely destroyed, but that's the same for any game. Online modes turn me off from most games because it's usually you vs. all the super die hards who know the games frontwards and backwards.

If online is discouraging because you're getting whooped, you should try to find new people you can learn with. A lot of people are willing to help you understand a game if you ask.

I mean I run into idiots so often online. I can just keep doing a single move over and over and over and they'll keep getting hit by it, then send a salty message after about how spam isn't fun or something. But that raises two questions: Why stop using something that someone is stupid enough to keep falling for, and why isn't that stupid person trying to do anything different to counter said thing?

These people could benefit greatly by just asking a question of two. The main problem though is that I'm guessing people like that are 5-years-old and don't want to talk to people. Like I've literally perfected people with one finger. They keep mashing random attacks, I simply do some invincible move, and they get hit. Repeat. They never learned that if they just block they'll have forever and a day to counter. Although to be honest I don't see how they can be having fun just mashing random shit...

All of you that are throwing out "I'm Bad at them" as an excuse for not being a fan, have you ever sat down and actually tried to learn how to play?

And I mean actually tried to learn how to play. Not sat down and tried to do nothing but combos despite not understanding basic stuff then given up because you've not managed on your first few tries.

The things you need to know to get most people past the baby ranks of most current online fighters will take you at worst an hour of sitting in training mode and working out the basics, and there are plenty of resources available to help you out with this.

Also if you think there is nobody available to play with, there are plenty of discords, reedits, and Facebook sub communities for a ton of games for you to find people.

If you'd prefer local offline then check out https://toptier.gg/events

Fighting games are amazing, and the feeling you get for winning against another opponent is a feeling that no other genre would be able to come close to fulfilling. It does take some time and effort on your part though, which is why the casuals won't stick around after they beat the single player content.

Im thinking they are also bad at the games they do play, but competing in fighting games can be a brutal, frustrating experience. I really like real time strat games like Starcraft, which are also rage-inducing if you suck and I do, so I just watch the pros beat each other up now.

I legit have more fun doing dumb stuff like trying to stay alive without attacking for as long as possible, or trying to jump out of the ring before getting KO'd, or taunt spamming every single round than actually trying and getting 0 to 2 punches in before getting destroyed.

It's a lot better for my self- esteem too.

I honestly don't understand. Like anything else in life, you're gonna suck when you start out and improvement is entirely down to you to put the effort in.

If you enjoy playing but don't like that you're bad, make the effort to not be bad.

If you don't enjoy playing and have no interest in not being bad, then fine.

If you want some quick tips on not being bad, the. Stop pressing buttons likes a lunatic, block, and punish. Boom you just made it out of bronze in SFV.

I only ever had this problem with guitar. I'm guessing other strings might be the same. Brass instruments are great about this, since you'll usually have three to five valves which are usually either open or closed. The tricky part is mostly with your lips, tongue and lungs, which is a completely different set of muscles.

I know most of these are solvable through practice, but I have no desire to be better.

Because blocking is terrible. In half the games you take chip damage anyway. In half the rest you get guard crushed and left open for an eternity so the opponent can do the biggest move they have against you. In half the rest, they can just crouch and still hit you, and if you crouch block they can use a mid attack and still hit you, and regardless of how you're situated, they can still throw you.

And to make matters worse, they somehow know exactly what I'm thinking so no matter what I do they counter it in the best possible way.

I was mainly thinking of Hilda's 5B in BBTAG for this. It's a full screen normal, but here's the thing: It's slow as fuck, unsafe on block, can be crouched by some characters, and has super laggy recovery. So if you tried literally any option other than trying to punch, you wouldn't get hit by it. Although I played a guy who got all salty when I told him to just block it and he said it was unblockable lol XD

Blocking isn't meant to be something to permanently keep you safe from every single attack with no skill involved. Of course you'll have stuff like throws, high/low mixups, guard breaks, chip, etc. so you need to make decisions on how to counter them and what your most appropriate reaction should be. Them knowing what you're going to do, however, is simply because you were outplayed. They could've noticed a pattern in your habits or conditioned you into thinking a certain way. Mind games are a big part of fighters.

In BBTAG, Kanji's Reversal Action (or DP) is an attack that makes him temporarily invincible and hits a small area around his body. It also has the bonus effect that if any melee attack hits him while his attack is active, the opponent gets shocked and takes damage. However, like most DPs, it has terrible recovery if it's whiffed or blocked. And yet idiots will mash attacks and get countered by it over and over. Why is that? What's going through their mind as their gameplan fails 20 times in a row? They could easily just block and punish, but instead choose instead to repeat the thing that failed them so miserably. Can you tell me why people do this?

Let's break this all down then shall we. I'll use SFV as an example as it's the one I have the most experience with.

DevsBro
I am this guy and let me tell you why I am this guy.

Because I don't know what else to do.

I jump, I get hit.

Stop jumping at people when you're within Anti Air range. Simple. You shouldn't be jumping unless there was an actual reason for it.

I duck, I get hit.

Street Fighter has very few overheads per character. There are the obvious jump in attacks which are quite easy to stand block unless you're asleep and there are the command normal overheads which are usually slow enough to react to with a standing block and are punishable when blocked. In the event that you do get tagged by a command normal overhead, very few characters can continue to combo after that.

I block, I get hit.

This makes no sense but arite.

I try to punch, I get hit.

If you whiff a button in front of people you can be hit as you recover or before the move comes out if they press a faster button than you did. It's simply a case of pressing your buttons when it's safe to do so.

I back away, I get hit.

Low attacks obviously can't be blocked standing. It's down to you to work out which moves are lows and their ranges. Walk a bit, crouch block. That's how you can advance towards somebody safely.

I am also this guy, and let me tell you why I am this guy.

Because blocking is terrible.

Absolutely not the case.

The combination of blocking and pushback is a clear indicator of when you're safe to make your move.

Certain characters can sting together multiple low attacks in an attempt to convert it into a full combo but after a certain number of blocks they'll be pushed back to a distance where another button would whiff. They can't get straight back In to your face to start all over again unless you let them walk up to you with no fear.

There are also things that you can block that leave you the opportunity to act when they're still in range, be it unsafe options that can be punished or buttons that are safe, but where you recover faster which allows you to press a button and reverse the pressure onto them.

The reason it seems that people always know how to counter everything is because they've put the time into finding answers to what you do.

And at a low level, the time required to find those answers isn't much.

Also because they don't know what else to do. Projectiles are terrible--people just jump over them--and like I mentioned before, if I try to block, you'll just crouch punch. Or throw. Or guard crush. Or whatever.
But seriously, after 20+ of the same move in a row, why expect something else? You could do something else. Literally anything else, even not pressing anything at all, because going down the path of mashing against an invincible move isnt gonna go anywhere

Fighting games are my favorite genre. I truly believe they encompass all that is great in competitive 1v1 gaming. Takes actual skill and arguably physical athlete tier reaction and instinct.

The learning curve is probably the steepest of any genre. Also I lose interest after a few matches with people.
