...for possessing images? The only thing it mentions him "doing" is having photos and gratifying himself. It doesn't even say he was trafficking in the photos (which would directly sponsor the creation of it), let alone that he created or commissioned the content (which would have directly led to abuse). Overlooking that he should probably be in a psych ward rather than a prison (with a mandatory stay), the death penalty in general has no place in a civilized society.

Otherwise, he got a lighter sentence because he took a plea bargain. Had it gone to trial, obviously he'd be facing America's usual draconian sentencing (which has given us the world's largest prison population, even exceeding the much-larger China)

He ran a cryptocurrency company so I assume just the darkweb. Cryptocurrency in general is used to deal in illegal shit. You might as well ask why the government hasn't done more to investigate people trafficking in cryptocurrency because people use it to avoid getting caught paying for illegal shit.

Jesus, really? That's fucked up.

My response to Zeus was gonna be this: by the sheer action of having child porn on his computer, this guy has arguably participated in - and objectively rewarded - human trafficking. He himself wasn't out in the field raping kids necessarily, but by serving as a willing audience, he has encouraged others to commit more sex crimes against children.

If there was no audience on the internet for child rape, people wouldn't risk incriminating themselves by uploading videos of it for the enjoyment of others - by virtue of this CEO enjoying and downloading it, he has spurred the creators of the content he enjoys to produce more of it. By partaking in underage pornography, this CEO has implicitly supported sex trafficking of minors.

If you want to get snipey and pedantic about it and say "well they're still gonna rape kids whether sick pervs enjoy it or not", yes - child rapists are still going to rape children. A majority of child rapists probably don't record their rape - hell, even regular rapists usually don't record their rape. But this category of child rapists who record what they do for a willing audience - if they see people downloading or watching their videos in which they have sex with a child, they are going to thrive on the attention and fuck that same child and/or other children to provide for that audience. Engaging with child porn enables producers of that content to keep sexually abusing children. So a person who engages with that content and eggs it on is actively enabling child rape, and arguably contributing to its creation.
