I played Battle City a lot with my sister. But it hasn't had a port to any of the virtual consoles, so I don't know if it was really fun or just nostalgia.

oh god, so many choices.... I've played so many games, and enjoyed the time spent with them. my favorite would be The Adventures Of Bayou Billy, followed by TMNT 2&3. and I would think that SMB3 has held up well over the years

Lots of good choices.
Tetris, Dr. Mario, smb3, all still play as well as anything on the market today in there respective genres.

I've got lots of personal love for Metal Gear, and Dragon Warrior, which while solid, would not probably hook someone that doesn't already have nostalgia for them.

Oh, that's a tough one. Probably one of these:
SMB2 and 3
Zelda 2
Tetris
Gauntlet
Castlevania
Bubble Bobble
Journey to Silius
Legacy of the Wizard
IronSword: Wizards & Warriors II
Sweet Home (no nostalgia for this one, though, as I found it via the internet)
Getsu Fuuma Den (see above, also holy crap this one is hard...)

Journey to Silius gets a special note for having one of the most underrated OSTs on the NES, imo. So good, every single track is so good. You have to listen to the whole thing if you never have before.

But I think I have to go with Legacy of the Wizard just because I've never played a game quite like it since. It's got an interesting combination of mechanics that make it pretty unique, and I've actively searched for other games like it and haven't been satisfied with what I've found.

Oh, there were two questions, whoops. Let me fix that.... >_>

Favorite would be one of these probably:
SMB2 and 3, Zelda 2, Tetris, Gauntlet, Castlevania, Bubble Bobble, Journey to Silius, Legacy of the Wizard, IronSword: Wizards & Warriors II, Sweet Home (not localized), Getsu Fuma Den (not localized)

I think I have to go with Legacy of the Wizard for my overall favorite just because I've never played a game quite like it since. It's got an interesting combination of mechanics that make it pretty unique, and I've actively searched for other games like it and haven't been satisfied with what I've found.

As for what game has held up the best?
Hrm.
SMB3 and Kirby's Adventure and Tetris are obvious choices.
Lagrange Point is worth noting, but it runs into the same problems that Sweet Home and Getsu Fuma Den do; it wasn't localized.

Yes! Another Probotector guy!

Well, my favourite is Shadowgate!

The one that still holds up great is Probotector II: Return of the Evil Forces (Super C for you americans)! With a close follow up by Vice: Project Doom!
