When the ending of a show betrays its fans so hard that any cultural impact it may have had is evaporated instantly.

HIMYM is the obvious example, and another example is Game of Thrones. Despite having a vice-like grip on the nuts of popular culture when they were out, the endings are received so poorly that no-one really gives a shit about them any more.

I didn't think the HIMYM ending was received negatively, but it did have a *very* polarizing effect.

Disagree about HIMYM, the finale was trash but it's a sitcom, what is there to discuss about it like 6 years later?

Sitcoms can be powerful series with interesting messages.

Lost did it before HIMYM. Also Dexter, but I don't remember that being quite on the same level of popularity.

I think you're overstating how much HIMYM dominated culture.

And even the "culture" around GoT was mostly about what would happen next, so of course a lot of that died when the show ended.

As far as I remember, the Mad Men ending was well received, but people don't really talk about that show anymore.

They spent an entire season on that, AND did that stupid episode where Ted literally let Robin go like a balloon to establish they were 100% done.

The ending made it feel like a complete waste of time. It's like the writers intended for him to end up with Robin from the beginning, but built up the characters for so long, and introduced the mother - which everyone loved - that they wrote themselves into a corner.

Once shows end people stop talking about it.

Breaking Bad might be the greatest show ever and sure there are people that rewatch it but nobody cares about it anymore because it ended.

Honestly I was upset that the mother ended up with a DB like Ted. Ted easily became the worst person around season 2-3.

HIMYM is still stunning to me. The excuse Ive seen given is They filmed the ending scenes with the kids at the end of season one! It was always going to be that!

That makes it even worse in my opinion. If you knew how the series would end for eight years, how on earth do you make the storytelling decisions you did?

People still hold up shows like Friends and Frasier as classic sitcoms. Like damn, haven't you ever had a hankering to dig into some Frasier out of the blue? Even on this board, people seem to regard it as a GOAT contender.

When was the last time you saw a HIMYM thread where the subject line didn't explicitly mention the polarising ending?

Would Scrubs count?

Seasons 1-8 were mostly fantastic with Season 8's finale being one of the best "series" finales of all time, then the unwanted Season 9 showed up.

I think it has more to do with people just being more "in tune" to what's current, than anything else. Me, personally, I didn't dislike the ending to HIMYM (nor Game of Thrones, Lost, etc.), but I don't often reflect back on those shows because, well, they're over. Some stuff will stay in the "meme lexicon" for a little while, but most people now just kinda move on.

I'm sure age will eventually play a factor, too. Like, I don't see THAT many people still talking about or referencing "iconic" shows like Friends or Seinfeld, anymore. The people who watched those at their peak are probably in their 40s and 50s by now.

In any case, people today are much more quicker to move on to the next thing. Meme culture cycles pretty quickly. And as far as content goes, there's such an overload of media to consume that everything almost starts to blend together and not stand out as much.

What season 9?

Scrubs had 8 seasons, one of the greatest series finales of all time, and then nothing else happened.

Heroes wasn't a good show with a bad ending. It was a bad show that accidentally had a good first season.

All joking aside, Zach and Donald mentioned on the rewatch podcast this week that season 9 was supposed to be a spin-off when a fan asked them about it.

They did the "pretend it doesn't exist" thing for a bit first though lol

Man you're not wrong, though I'd argue the 4th season was starting to make the show good again.

I went back for a re-watch, and couldn't get past the second season. =(

The difference with shows with bad endings and good one for me is if you can still re watch them or not. I can sit down and re watch Lost, The office, Sienfield, breaking bad and even heroes. But shows like Got or dexter while still had solid seasons I cant stand to watch them again cause the endings or final seasons just diminish the whole show.

Everyone's criteria is different but I agree with TC a really bad final season does destroy a popular shows whole reputation in hindsight of it.
