I remember getting a PS3 and thinking, huh, this is pretty similar to the PS2 but the graphics are a bit better and shinier. Then I got a PS4 and thought these graphics are nearly identical to PS3.

Now PS1/N64 to PS2/GC, that was a real upgrade.

If you were still gaming on a CRTV during the PS3 launch then I can understand. I don't know how someone can look at a game like Sands of Time for PS2 and Assassins Creed 1 for PS3 and think they remotely look the same on an HDTV lol.

Using that as an example I have no idea how you could look at Uncharted 3 and the move on to 4 and think there's no significant difference between them

This was absolutely incredible as well. It took everything we knew about how video games look and totally turned it on its head. Rogue Leader on Gamecube absolutely blew me away as a wee lad, with how real the water looked.

that was where home consoles really began to match and overtake arcade cabs, and then you had the Sega consoles as these weird intermediate steps.

This and Motorstorm were my huge, holy shit moments. The mud in Motorstorm, and especially how it would splatter on the screen (lol) were just so far beyond anything I thought video games could look like, and the same is to be said about literally every aspect of COD4.

Also the fucking ENORMOUS leap from San Andreas to GTA IV and RDR. Classic GTA characters barely even looked like people, and then it jumped straight to being basically interactive movies.

Also while the tech demo obv looked great, the improvements with each gen are absolutely becoming diminishing returns, as well as being mostly incremental improvements in increasingly technical aspects as opposed to these massive, all-encompassing leaps forward.

Naw I remember being one of the first people in my high school to get a ps3 it felt pretty advanced but the 1st year was complete ass. No good games and a very basic online and system menu. Imagine having to close a game completely to message someone online lol.

SNES to N64 and ps1 was and will always be the largest jump in console gaming.

this, especially on PC. Quake 3 to Half Life 2 graphics was insane

NES to SNES to PS1 were the only good jumps for consoles. Every console after that looked awful compared to PCs

PS3/360 era had by far the worst visuals with gross low resolutions and framerates

Look at any GBA game and then look at Metroid Prime (which was the launch experience on DS) and things like Birth by Sleep and Peace Walker.

SNES to N64 (and really any 2d console to 3D console) was obviously the biggest because it didn't just redefine how games looked but defined how they could not be played. A literal extra dimension was added to gameplay.

I would say N64/PS to Gamecube/PS2/X-Box was the next major jump. It might not have redefined gaming like the previous jump, but I it finally showed just how amazing these games could potentially look now that developers knew what they were doing with 3D gaming. PS2->PS3 and PS3->PS4 were also big visual leaps but at that point watching things get dramatically prettier loses a bit of the luster and 3D is old hat.

Im also not trying to make an argument for one generational leap being bigger than another; obviously 2D-3D was the biggest leap forward the medium ever has and likely ever will see. Im more just reminiscing as well as commenting on how the lines feel a lot more blurred between gens now and the improvements more oriented towards fine details.
