May you some day soon rise back to prominence and not go the way of things like jazz and disco and never recover your mainstream appeal.

My library would say otherwise, but sure, if mainstream appeal is your only barometer, I guess you could say this.

Rock isn't mainstream anymore. Have you seen any new bands or artists come out with songs or albums that chart high on the Billboard charts or got any radio play on the Top 40 stations recently?

I haven't, the only ones who do are the ones who have been around for awhile and are already established.

Rock bands still chart high on the Billboard charts. They just dont get played on mainstream rock radio because theyre too busy playing old RHCP songs instead

I conceded that point, but I don't think that means it's dead. Getting access to music outside of the mainstream has never been easier.

But have you seen any NEW bands or artists charted on the Hot 100 or Top 200 in the last few years and got radio play on the Top 40 stations where they play other genres along with it? I just don't mean the Rock charts for Billboard or the stations that are specifically just for Rock music.

The internet made mainstream music irrelevant. Only the most basic of people even listen to the radio anymore so the music has to cater to those

Post some good recent Rock songs that sound like something from the 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s. I like Rock music from those eras.

Rock music is still being made, yes. That's obvious. But is it drawing in as many new fans as other genres? Are musicians able to live comfortably as those in other genres?

At the end of the day I would love for my favorite Rock musicians to be able to quit their full time real jobs and live comfortably from making music. It is a job after all.

There are lots of rock bands that are big names on the festival circuit.

Car Seat Headrest, King Gizzard, Courtney Barnett, The National, Tame Impala, royal blood, Portugal the man, front bottoms, cage the elephant, vampire weekend are some that come to mind as top names on lineups recently

Honestly, let it stay dead for a few more years. That, or start propelling bands like King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard to mainstream prominence.

I don't have a lot of love for like obnoxious rock fans, the kind who bought in on Disco Demolition Nights and all that. You want to revel in the destruction of a genre of music you don't like, then suffer the same fucking fate, asshole. But hey, if the demand for currently available bands start to climb, I won't be upset. Just stop dusting off AC/DC and shit, and start investing in smaller, upcoming bands.

The problem is rock music kinda is in a point where its contradicting itself.

The style of music has historically leaned towards being made by the youth and being primarily about young peoples issues. However, most rock music fans, and many of its most famous performers as well have developed a sort of nostalgia complex. If its not how the legends did it then its usually written off unfortunately as gimmicky or weird. There is such a fascination that the current state of contemporary rock has with its own history that is sort of unhealthy and dependent on mimicry rather than innovation. Not that those artists being worshipped arent great, they by and large are, but this is the same type of stage that has caused genres like jazz to remain stagnant for decades.

I think all genres of music have potential for revivals, and theres always going to be something good going on if you look for it, but I also think its okay for a heyday to be just that. Rock may not need to ever be as famous as it once was.

My mum liked their revival album back when that launched. Rock or Bust is generally considered a turd though.

Brian Johnson had a decent enough run, and Back in Black is a pretty legendary comeback. But yeah, it's time to put that horse to sleep. One of the band members is dead, Brian Johnson sounds like a waste disposal system and the fact that they made it to the 2010's at all is a fluke at best. If rock fans want to keep pulling these geriatrics out time after time instead of investing in smaller bands and helping them get good word of mouth, then they can go out with the oldies.

For what it's worth though, you've still got folks like Alice Cooper and bands like Judas Priest who are putting out well received stuff. If they're still good, they're still good. But there's that, and there's a bunch of old has-beens banking on a name that hasn't been relevant for decades. Acts like that need to fuck off and make way for the new blood.
