Board 8 > Witcher 3 is beating Skyrim???

I enjoyed The Witcher 3 more than I enjoyed Skyrim but come on... Skyrim has managed to stay popular and relevant for almost the entire decade. I don't think it ever left the "most popular boards" top 5 on this site since it was released in 2011. They are both 10's in my book with the major difference being that Skyrim has remained a 10 for this whole decade. This being a "Game of the Decade" contest you would think it wouldn't even be close.

I don't understand the reasoning behind voting for The Witcher 3 for "Game of the Decade." Maybe, "My Personal Favorite Game."

I think most people just vote for their favorite game in any given match-up, and when they don't it's more likely to be bracket-voting than "this game best represents the decade" voting.

I'm pretty surprised. Skyrim is my current "game of all time at present." That said, I have not played The Witcher 3 so it's probably even better than I'd imagine.

I think Skyrim has been dragged down in recent years by Bethesda imploding and all the rereleases, which probably draw attention to its bugs and many, many flaws even more. I love the game and the open world and I just don't gel with the ten or so hours I put into the Witcher (gameplay wise, I love the story but the combat and exploring are both not much fun). Despite that, if I were going to look at it from a technical point of view or even an enjoyment point for most other people, the Witcher wins every time.

I feel like you didn't read or understand the rest of my post, or even the point of the poll.

For some people, their personal favorite game overrides "influence" and "legacy." I know because I'm one of them. Some game's legacy or influence isn't going to make it any more or less enjoyable to play, so that's worthless to me when voting on games.

No, I feel like you don't understand the point of the poll.

All of these contests, every single one of them, are popularity based ones. The vast majority of people don't care if the banner above says "Game of the Decade" or something else. They vote for their favorite.

The winner is whatever people like the most. Always has been, always will be.

Let's be perfectly clear here. The Netflix show is earning Witcher many, many votes. Very simple to understand why it got so far.

If the point of the poll is "favorite game" then why not use that as the name of the poll?

I think I have my answer now. People on this site just vote for their favorite game regardless of what the point of the poll is. Kind of disappointing since it seems there really is no point to having "different" polls when the reason behind the votes are always the same, regardless.

Factors to consider:

If you are talking impactful games, both Fortnite and Minecraft didn't make it out of the gate. Both are even more culturally significant than Skyrim.

The Witcher 3 is much more critically acclaimed.

The Witcher also has had a huge boost to it's relevancy with the Netflix show. And Skyrim has been relevant in part due to Bethesda refusing to release a new game while re-releasing it at least twice a tear.

On the subject, everyone hates Bethesda these days, which certainly isn't doing Skyrim any favors.

I was skeptical the Witcher 3 would pull it out the entire way, but it really is the better game and is a much more worthy runner up than Skyrim.

It's literally one more word and specifies the context, hardly "a bit wordy." Game of the Decade leaves the interpretation more open which I thought was the entire point.

If "favorite" is implied in all of these polls then they are all the same. That seems like an even shitter thing to me. Having all your polls boil down to what your "favorite" game is, instead of taking the time to think about the other factors that might influence a game's importance in the culture/industry or relevance in a poll. So boring with no nuance, and very limiting to actual discussion of the topic/poll.

This is reasoning I can understand and is what I was hoping was behind many of the votes. Not just simply "I like Witcher better."

Witcher has never beaten Skyrim before and was weaker than Skyrim in 2015.

I've played both over the years quite a bit and I think TW3 is definitely the better game. Imo TW3 really is the best game of the decade.

If you want things to discuss, contest stats are a science that has been in development for 18 years and has generated endless debates and knowledge. Just check the stats thread (currently in its 1631th iteration).

It's just that we don't analyse what the best game is. We analyse what people are likely to like the most.
