I should do this. Given my weekend alcohol intake over the last year, I am concerned that I will eventually develop cirrhosis.

Or, as a family friend did in the 1990s, begin haemorrhaging and develop brain damage. He was never the same afterwards. It was as if he had his personality wiped.

I'm usually a heartless, soulless piece of shit in all of my relationships. For some reason I really click with this girl, and I said some absolutely horrific shit to her the other night. I have no idea why at all. The fact that I just blacked out all of that and the fact that she thought it was her fault pissed me off so much, I just decided to drop the booze in a second. She didn't even have a thought about breaking up with me. Which tells me she's had some shit in her previous relationships, and I don't want to be another one of those fucking assholes.

Shit like that has been happening a lot more in the past few years, I have really insulted a lot of my close friends for no reason, but with my gf, it was the wake up call I needed.

Ya know I do worry about having a bad day down the road and it's going to drive me to drink. I think that will be my biggest challenge especially since everywhere I fucking turn is a place that sells alcohol.

Honestly it wouldn't be a bad idea to slow it to a couple beers a night, then every other night just to ween off of it and not do it cold turkey. Amy Winehouse was a heavy drinker and she died when she quit cold turkey and it shocked her body. You don't wanna through your system completely out of whack that drastically.

I know what it is. Years ago I had a really serious relationship with someone, I was all but positive we were going to end up married. I started noticing signs of her just fizzling out of it and I kept thinking, ehh she'll come back around. I spent wayyy to much time lying to myself about it and should have ended it earlier.

So every future relationship I was completely checked out from day 1 because I didn't want to do that shit again. Now i've finally convinced myself I gotta give it another try and I found a good one, but the liquor completely convinced me I would just get fucked around again and I think that's what led to me blowing up on her the other night.

I can't let that happen again, hence this topic.

I don't really need a fucking "well actually" in a thread like this, but thanks for chiming in. Point being...

"More serious symptoms of withdrawal, known as alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS), can include delirium tremens (DT) in people with a severe alcohol addiction.

The effects of AWS can appear within hours of stopping drinking, or several days later.

Symptoms of AWS often include shaking, headache, high blood pressure, anxiety, and tachycardia (increased heart rate).
DT is also a serious type of alcohol withdrawal that can be fatal.
It is common among people with a history of alcohol withdrawal, those who drink heavily, and those who have had an addiction to alcohol for more than 10 years.
The most serious symptoms of DT are seizures, hallucinations, and confusion. However, many other symptoms, including sensitivity to light, confusion, and nausea, may also be present."

Quitting cold turkey and not slowing down first can very much be fatal, which was my entire point. We're here to support, not to Google something to prove someone wrong.

Mabus is absolutely right. I got a friend who has gone into seizures if he stops drinking for too long. That scares the hell out of me too because we grew up together and there's nothing I can do about it.

I'm also kinda so zoned out right now I'm just going right passed any negative shit in this topic.

Full-on DTs are less common than you think.

I've had withdrawals literally dozens of times and even I'm not at that level yet.

Keep an eye out for shaky hands, trouble eating and sleeping, vomiting, that sort of thing is most likely.

Also I just did the math, I'll be 6 months sober on Wednesday.

Congrats Drizzy I'm proud of you man.

It's a weird situation I wasn't planning on this morning or at noon. It was just a few hours ago, it was a clear cut no second guessing decision. Has to be done. The next part is to make it stick. Every single person I know drinks, so there's going to be challenges. I get it. But I wouldn't have made this topic and I wouldn't be telling you guys this shit if I wasn't serious about doing it.

The thing that scares the hell out of me is if I can't do it when I know I have every reason to now.

The operative word being *can*. As Drizztlink has mentioned, delirium tremens is relatively rare.

I did not google something to well actually your incorrect claim. I used wikipedia.

Delerium tremens can be fatal, but plastering a topic in which someone has declared their attention to quit with horror stories (using incorrect information) is hardly supportive.

If the topic creator believes he is at risk of DTs, then he should seek assistance in managing the process of quitting drinking, since it is doubtful that just tapering off is a sustainable strategy without backsliding and advice from a qualified medical practitioner will be far more useful and safer than either you or I could provide.

As you said, we are here to offer support.

I know a few people who have stories like that.

One guy woke up in jail, no idea how he got there.

He looked up at the bed above him, and someone wrote "How much is enough?"

That was his moment, he hasn't had a drink since.
