I watch all anime only with sub if I need it.

Nothing wrong with dub , but the text must be slightly changed to fit. Sometimes the different reaction in speech can make big difference and can lead you to misunderstanding of the character's personality.

Sub is not perfect either , because while the anime or movie is being translated the directors don't focus on pure translation. They think that people in different countries with different culture would not understand or appreciate the original ,so they change some text a bit to make it more fitting for the specific audience.

In my opinion , there is nothing to misunderstand. If you watch anime, you will most likely hear or read about Japan's culture and similar things and while it's a bit different ...it's not so different from anyone else and it's clearly understandable. There is no need to for changes in translation. I would rather appreciate the original , because I find the character's responses way better and more fitting.

It's really depends on how comfortable you are with subs.

Personally, I always want to hear something in the original voices if I can, but I know some people really despise having to read subs.

But if you're okay with subs I say subs.

Very, very rarely does this happen and it doesn't happen in NGE. The literal Netflix dub just made the show more awkward to watch.

I would say it happens all the time.

But our opinion can be different because we might watch different anime series.

It's a bit annoying when you hear your favorite character say something good in Japanese and then read something that doesn't make it so special in the english traslation.

Sometimes I'm having a hard time convincing my friends that the character was very thoughtful rather than what it seemed to be that he didn't care , something like that.

Apparently they changed it back in Super, and I fucking hate Goku in Super. Also, Goku sounds like a goddamn grandma is the sub, so fuck sub Goku.

I watched dubbed Evangelion and subbed EoE.

The difference usually occurs in personal lines from a big line that can hint character's personality to small lines or details that can make scene funny or more serious.

Most fighting scenes or scenes where a character gives an order are translated well , most likely accurately.

I would say it's hard to translate lots of english expressions to japanese and lots of japanese expressions to english. But it would feel better to first try to understand the thinking of the art's creator and then watch his/hers original piece than watch version that was made on assumption that you will understand it better.

Just my opinion. I prefer it that way.

For eva I personally think both the sub and dub are fairly bad so I usually just go with the dub.

I'm personally quite the fan of eva, I just don't think either voice cast did a particularly great job. I do understand why people don't like it though.

The original sub is fine, but Shinji's Japanese VA annoyed me. The original dub is one of the best of its era, but the Netflix one sucks (not so much the performances, but the script changes).

For some anime I'd argue it's the ideal way to do it. Especially anime that don't take place in japan like cowboy bebop and black lagoon. There's also something kind of charming and nostalgic to me about old shitty dubs. Rewatching outlaw star right now, dubbed like it was on toonami all those years ago, and it's pretty bad, but somehow that enhances it for me.

yeah, i watched some comparison videos, and i don't see what the point was, exactly. the quality didn't go up at all, which is what i would have expected. instead they said the translation was a little more accurate, which is fine, i guess, ok?

No one asked for it to be more accurate, they just wanted the original content in a nice concise place to watch. Netflix couldn't do that right and had to make it their own somehow.

TC, I asked the same question a few months ago and ended up watching the Netflix dub and checking YouTube for the changes. There's a few major ones that people harp on but overall it's fine. I prefer a dub so I can look away from the TV for a second if need be (cats and web browsing at the same time). Sure I could watch the sub and focus solely on the TV for the entire time but I get bored of having to constantly read along all night. And the later it gets the more tired reading makes me so there's that.

That said, I forced myself to watch the Dragon Ball Super sub because I wanted to see how it ended before the dub would catch up.

Here the difference:

OG dub "shinji is the 3rd child"

Netflix " shinji is the 3rd children"

Just awkward shit like that, that didn't need to exist but does so because the creator doesn't understand translation, apparently.

Shinji is fucked up. The entire latter half of the series and End of Evangelion is all about why Shinji is fucked up and his eventual acceptance of it and he believes he has nobody to talk to.

You want to know if the Sub or Dub is better, but don't want spoilers. That's impossible. In describing what makes one better than the other you kind of have to cite examples and therefore you gain knowledge of the show. Just fucking watch it already and if you don't like it switch to the other or turn it off entirely.

The new Netflix dub has some small changes that drastically change the way certain very important scenes and character arcs are interpretted, and changed some music because of licensing. Whichever way you go, make sure it's the old release and not the Netflix version.

Just basic human nature, it is harder to focus on something if your eyes gather have to gather all the information and it's coming in two different formats. It's just easier if your ears can carry some of the information gathering weight.

If someone knows they like subs, they should do subs, if they know they like dubs they should do dubs. But if they are not sure they do dubs for ease of access.

I watched first episode subbed and switched to dub, I heard worse dubs, I dont mind it. On episode 19ish I think. Watching on dvd not netflix
