Should I do a preset character?
The preset characters are nice, they all have good story built in. I have never played as a full custom character. You can still build the preset characters into any type of build you want

I'd recommend doing so for a first playthrough, since they each have their own background that will have some plot related importance and their own missions.

and yea, you can customize each one to make them look how you want.

Groovy.

I like the Assassin girl, Lizard, and Skelly boi.

Lizard mostly because I was NOT expecting him to have an Oxford accent.

each of the races has their own strengths

the skeleton guy can use his finger bones to lock pick, so you don't need to worry about not having any lockpicks, just as long as you level up his thievery

the assassin woman is an elf, and elves can eat body parts you might see around, and use them to get memories from the person they belonged to.

and lizards can use their claws to dig without you needing a shovel

Dope.

I'm leaning towards Inquisitor.

Gonna take out a point in one skill for Persuasion, I always need to be a smooth-talker in these games.

Well, working my way through the boat.

Old lady blew up a bunch of guards and I used up my club beating down a door to get some poison, a scroll of Restoration, and some recipes.

So far I'm only responsible for one murder.

Got to the swamp.

Freed the elf and found out about the boat, but I ended up leaving by murdering the torturer.

Make sure to get the Teleportation gloves ASAP, or make sure multiple party members know the skill. Teleport shenanigans were probably my favorite part of the game.

I did use a scroll of it to reach a Curious Chest just outside the fort.

I'm starting to figure out the system a bit more.

I wasn't expecting full-on turn based.

"No no, I need to stand in this fire for a while longer. Moving now would be rude."

Current party is the dead Guy, the lizard guy, and Angry Aragorn.

Do you want us to tell you where the teleportation gloves are or would you rather play the game without outside input? Even without the gloves, there are other ways to hop around as the game progresses.

What classes are you going with dead guy, lizard guy, and Angry Aragorn?

Hint me.

Wizard, Fighter, Wayfinder in that order.

Didn't mess with them, I don't know this system well enough yet.

Hmm... trying to figure out a way of hunting at the location without giving it away. Theyre on an animal that doesnt wear gloves in real life.

Id say thats good class coverage. As you continue to play youll figure out how you like to fight.

Glad youre playing through this. Ive spent a lot of time in this game and am eager to see how you like it.

Did the fight to become The One and the blacksmith took off my collar, bounced out relatively quickly after that.

I suspect we both know how much this understates the usefulness of the teleport abilities.

Parts of that game seemed to go through insane difficulty spikes until you sat back and applied the Patrick Star method of problem-solving.

Only thing I'll recommend is saving a lot. Sometimes it autosaves, but there's nothing more disheartening than losing a fight and finding out the last time you saved was two hours ago.

I'm not an enormous fan of how buying and selling works in this.
it's been a while, and I haven't sold much stuff in the game, but iirc it all has to do with how much each seller likes you plus your bartering skills

so you can just donate all of the cheap stuff you wouldn't get much fun the seller anyway to them anyway, with the character that has the highest bartering stats for that kinda stuff.

I think you can get up to 100% favorability with each seller, but I could be wrong.

I found a guy named Zaleskar.

He gave A-Aragorn a crossbow then decided to get all pissy with me.

Game said he was too powerful and I should run, so I killed him.

Lotta sweet gear on that guy.

Oh shoot, forgot to mention: if youre planning on using both Sebille and Red Prince, their quests are tied to the same NPC on Fort Joy, but Sebille will kill him if shes around when you talk. You can finish Red Princes quest with him with Sebille detached from the party and standing far away, and then kill him afterwards for Sebille though.

Just explore everywhere. EVERYWHERE. teleporting is really fun and there's more stuff out there to discover that's a joy to do on your own. And it can be challenging a lot of times and make you think, make use of your surroundings. You can do some pretty hilarious shenanigans. :)
