Because that is what is happening all around you, right now. The state of Alaska has now banned all cruise ships from visiting in the summer, which usually brings in 1.2 million tourists. That is 1.2 million tourists not going to restaurants, or going on tours, or visiting shops, in 2020. Alaska literally has a 4 month period of summer, where it makes billions in tourism...but now all of that will go dark.

I know of two restaurants and one bar around me that have now closed down permanently because of the shutdown. Many more that I've picked up take-out from are saying that if it doesn't pick up by June, they will have to lock up as well.

I own a small business, and thank God I don't have much overhead costs, but enough to where I'll have to be careful. I'm currently out of work until 2021, with many of my clients saying they are scared to travel until there is a vaccine. I work in the travel biz, putting trips together for my clients all over the world, but nowadays, people are scared to go to their local Publix. I'm now buying locally and selling on eBay to pay the bills, but I have to keep this up for another 5-6 months before the deposits come in from early 2021 trips.

We all know corporations like Starbucks, McDonalds, 3M, Walmart, they are going to go through this with just a bad quarter, and then bounce right back in the summer time. Your favorite local restaurants and hangouts? Yeah, they'll be lucky to survive, and the few that do will have crippling debt, which will make them slaves to corporations.

...and yet we are all just fine with this, staying locked up as the world becomes more and more corporate. As a small business owner, this sucks.

And this SUCKS too, because I visit NYC all the time with school groups, and I know of so many local dessert and lunch spots that I love. All will probably shutter soon. Sucks big time.

This exactly. Don't blame the public for wanting to stay safe, blame the government for bailing out corporations that don't need bailing out. All these small businesses could be saved if selfish fucks like Bezos would open their wallet and take care of their own companies out of their own pockets. The government puts funding into the small businesses and the billionaires take care of their own, we aren't even having this discussion. It's moronic to lash out at the general public, a lot of us laid off or not working right now. We have no control, yet people like TC want to make us feel shame for not wanting to contract a potentially fatal virus.

Speaking of masks, haven't worn one since this started. Also, I've been driving all around Florida from day one, to buy things locally and sell them on eBay. Otherwise, my wife and I have to sell our house and attempt to move during this pandemic. I'm not putting my wife through that, plus we would lose our dogs cause they are huge, and we couldn't bring them to any apartment.

This just sucks, but everyone is just hiding and believing every word the media tells them. Like...I've never seen fear this widespread. Imagine when a real calamity happens.

Fucking THIS. No idea where all of these idiotic economists came from, but opening up early for MAYBE a week of decent business before hitting a second surge of infections and sending everyone running for the hills again is blindingly stupid.

Sooner or later everything will be boarded up. Very tragic indeed.

Even the reopening will not save the businesses because people won't and don't have the money to spend on said spots.

The virus is also going through heads and people will want to keep social distancing. We don't even know what the virus truly is and it is best and safe to stay away and wear a mask at all times.

A lot of these businesses needed the social interaction as it was apart of the system to bring people together and now it has fallen. Bars and clubs won't be the same ever again.

Again, that is not what I'm saying. You are asking 21 million who just lost their jobs to be fine with it, and be fine with the chaos that will ensue as they fight for a dwindling job market, and then come the riots as food runs out, and desperation and crime increase because people would do anything to feed their kids.

It's easy for some CEers who may be shut-ins, but some of us have families to feed. I've been working like a lunatic, even renting a car to drive ALL over Florida to find electronics to sell. I'm not going to just let the mortgage company take my house.

Meanwhile, 80% of us show no symptoms. There has to be a better solution than to just hide for the rest of the year. Unreal, how people are just okay with this. Even essential jobs aren't safe, because as jobs are lose, no one will be able to buy insurance, houses, go to the doctor, etc.

The point of this topic is that that fact is impossible. Small businesses haven't made a billion per quarter. We can't survive a lack of customers for a whole spring/summer. Some travel agencies and businesses are shuttered, because their busiest season, the summer, is now dead.

How can the government let corporations fail? They will grow stronger through lack of competition.

People don't realize that this global shutdown is going to leave more migrants without homes, more people losing their homes, more chaos in countries like India and various countries in Africa, where some communities may rely on donations and non-profit organizations, some of which will go defunct because people can't donate. The chaos that will ensue is going to be absolutely huge if we stay shutdown over the summer.

It's just...this is madness that everyone is just ignoring it, watching their Netflix and Youtube, listening to Google, Facebook, and Apple with their ads encouraging us to stay in, as they build into even bigger corporations to steal more data.

So you are telling tens of thousands from poor countries, who go off and join the cruise ships to earn money for their poor families back home, that they should go under because...?

I've been on like 10 cruises. I hate them, but my clients love them. They tip the staff a ton, and so do I. Now those people will have to go back home and work in a poor community that will probably run out of money if this keeps up.
