But most of mainland Europe has a long and torrid history of being dominated by certain rulers/dynasties. Just look up the land holdings of King Charles V of Spain if you want a solid example. And by the great empire period time of Britain in the 1700-1800s, the whole goal in colonies was access to resources and trade routes etc. India used to be ruled by an actual British company.
