They colonized North America, Africa and Asia, but left Europe alone. Why didn't they try to make colonies there?

They probably could have colonized Greece, for example.

Because Europe was basically equal technology wise at least for the major players it was much easier to send a boat across the Atlantic and conquer a country that didn't have access to the technology of the time.

Look up Battle of Agincourt

As a poster noted, they conquered chunks of france for a bit. Joan of Arc happened though.

Oh, I forgot about Ireland. Was that considered a colonization?

When you think about it, Ireland was kind of a "test run" for what they would do in India, in a way.

We joke, but fair or not, that's often how things were seen.

History is full of stories about X from the old country, who bought land from the local natives and yet is still referred to as the first person to ever settle there.

Not really. There was a whole raft of oppressive laws and ordinances enacted to dispossess the Irish of their land, forcibly displace them to make way for settlers from England and Scotland, determine where they were and were not allowed to live, tightly restrict their role in public life, etc, in a thoroughgoing way that the British did not attempt to do in India. A better comparison would be Kenya or apartheid South Africa.

They tried, that's why everybody in Europe was at war with each other all the time. They colonized Africa and America etc. because it was easier to conquer people who didn't have guns and weren't prepared for war than it was to conquer nations of roughly equal power.

You do realize at one point England controlled most of France, right?

Or do the Middle Ages just not count now?

But most of mainland Europe has a long and torrid history of being dominated by certain rulers/dynasties. Just look up the land holdings of King Charles V of Spain if you want a solid example.

And by the great empire period time of Britain in the 1700-1800s, the whole goal in colonies was access to resources and trade routes etc. India used to be ruled by an actual British company. Mainland Europe was a civilized headache that was never on the table. You couldnt colonize Italy, for example.
