My boyfriend wants to get guns for home defense after our alarm went off last night. He doesn't like that I'm home alone at night while he works.

What do you guys think of the Smith and Wesson M&P 380 Shield? I was watching videos and reviews and it seems like a good gun for beginners.

I have an XD .40 subcompact that I mainly leave on my nightstand, amongst other firearms I own in total.

My buddys wife and my dad both have a shield in 9mm and they both like it. Id imagine the 380 is the same. Another nice one is a Sig P238, but it might be a little excessively priced for a home defense firearm.

Someone posted a shotgun made by Beretta that was high speed with little recoil that absolutely would tear any intruder up. Not sure what the model is and Im sure it is expensive but you would hardly have to aim with that thing.

Shotgun is imo easier to hold and fire. Plus it has a better chance of hitting the bad guy at closer range. Possibly more intimidating as well.

I kinda agree. Handguns are a bit more scary because of how small and seemingly volatile they are. Shotguns are big and have a biiiig action to work. So there's no way you're accidentally setting the thing off if you're careful.

Yeah I'd rather be shot with a handgun. Shotgun will end whatever you point it at, but handguns are way easier to mishandle imo.

I've only ever fired a shotgun and I liked it.

What do you guys think of the Smith and Wesson M&P 380 Shield?

It's really good. Small and thin body type. There is also 2 different sized magazines so the Shield can fit comfortably in a small or larger hand. There is a new version out called the Smith and Wesson M&P 380 Shield EZ which is geared towards beginners and people who have a hard time racking the slide. I suggest going to your local gun store and trying out both ie loading, unloading, and racking the slide. You can also get the Shield in 9mm and 40 cal.

The EZ is the one I was looking at. It seems like a good bet. I can check it out when we go to the gun store and see what they recommend.

Also I know you guys are all talking about shotguns but I really am not prepared to have a shotgun. I'm very uncomfortable with guns and that is too intimidating for me at this point.

Honestly Jen you should go to a gun store with a range and get a feel for the guns. Even if its just going to a gun store to hold them. But something you need to consider is the ammo. I would suggest a firearm in a 9mm. This is a really common caliber and is a lot cheaper than say .40, .380, or .45. 9mm offers a nice capacity in most firearms, and the recoil is manageable.

But for your suggestion a M&P 380 Shield is a fine firearm. I've shot one a few times, and have no real complaints for it.

But if you do buy a gun make sure you heed the rules of firearm use, and do get practice in and familiarize yourself with it. If you have any comments or questions feel free to ask.

I would recommend that or a Glock. There are many choices for different sized hands.

My wife was also uncomfortable/intimidated by guns and starting with a handgun really helped. She is now comfortable shooting handguns, shotguns, and rifles. Also don't be afraid to ask questions at the gun store. You'd be surprise how many people are willing to teach you about guns and how they operate.

Do you expect you'd actually shoot someone? If you don't think you'd shoot it, a shotgun may seem less intimidating to you. Honestly living in an apartment or multi-family I wouldn't want any of my neighbors to have a shotgun for self defense.

I guess some things to consider are if you want to concealed carry ever and want something small in case you had to go out to a train station at night or something.

Or if you'd like to go hunting ever, even just hunting something small.

The only thing I can really recommend is taking a basic rifle or pistol course. I don't own a gun but took a few different classes and gun shows growing up and to the shooting range frequently because my dad enjoyed it. A rifle will be more accurate for you than a pistol under stress. And probably should have a good self-evaluation of your and your boyfriend's mental health before getting one.

Here's the other thing. If you actually have to use your firearm in a home defense situation, it's going to be taken by the police as evidence for the investigation and you're not getting it back any time soon. Best not to spend too much money on it then right?
