I would still rather play the original Umineko art than the Steam version that looks like Bible Black, though.

I haven't played Ciconia ($40 for probably 1/8th of a story holy shit get out of here) but looking at its artwork it's kind of legitimately inspiring how far ryukishi has come since Higurashi! (It's still not great compared to a ton of other stuff but the gap is still crazy)

Ciconia is on my short list to play. I still haven't seen many reactions to it but I dont really look for them. Heard it's pretty good? Idk

Ciconia has some pretty cool bits to it but it doesn't grab me as hard as Umineko did. But for sure it's good enough to keep buying future chapters. I really don't know where it will go from here.

A more specific comparison between the two below...
When it comes to Umineko Episode 1, everything once they get into Kinzo's study to the end of episode 1 is fantastic. I love love love everything about those scenes. From that point on Umineko really had its hooks in me. Ciconia's tension ramps up, but it really takes until the Christmas party to produce the same effect, and that's right before the end of the episode. Which is why I felt like I was left hanging somewhat more.

I know that Ciconia is supposed to be 4 episodes rather than 8. I'm not sure about the pricing. Ciconia was made available globally around the same time. You couldn't buy Umineko on Steam until way after it had been released in full. New episodes were released at Comiket one at a time, but I don't know how they were priced.

It feels largely lifeless to me.

For all the quality issues of the original art, it at least has character and is clear about the emotions it's trying to convey.

I don't think the gap between Steam and PS4 is too severe for Higurashi, though PS4 is the clear frontrunner.

For Umineko, though, there's absolutely no question that PS4 is miles ahead.

I'm solidly in the camp that finds the original Umineko art both charming and fitting but I'd probably run with the PS3 sprites on a replay. Steam is the easy loser there (but thankfully can be easily modded!)

Higurashi's original art is... just too much. Between the PS2 and Steam sprites I don't think you can really go wrong.

i really liked Ciconia episode 1. I thought it had a good mix of world-building, character interaction, action scenes, and what-the-hell-is-going-on.

Honestly after spending the money I didn't feel any moral issue just nabbing the full release elsewhere with everything just already fixed up after looking at the art comparison.

Heck, didn't even have to install it! It wasn't until almost halfway through that I started looking around and realized "wait, does everyone else's version NOT have voice acting and timed mouth movements to all of the dialogue?"

original higurashi/umineko art is like playing poe ssf hc

it's the only ethical true way to play

This is $40 for 1/4 the story while Umineko and Higurashi were $20 for 1/8 the story.

well honestly people being a price stickler is kinda weird to me...I dunno, its like going to see a movie. thats overpriced too, but people do it anyway.

anywayyyyyyyyyyyyy i'm about to wrap up Summer Pockets (I'm probably near the end) and my early verdict is: well, it's definitely no Clannad, but the non-female male sidekick buttmonkeys are the best since Sunohara, imho. definitely nailed it there.

also, g senjou is on sale for like 12 bucks which is a fantastic price

The way I see it, if something seems overpriced but I can't find anyone who actually played it complaining about it, it's probably priced appropriately.

Just finished You and Me and Her: A Love Story (Totono) and it's definitely an experience, such an experience I really don't know how to put it into words.

Not on a must play list but certainly an interesting game. Fairly short for 35 dollars, but whatever.
