In relation to covid 19?

People I see arguing for it seem to be the covid denier type so I instantly know to be highly skeptical.

I just don't know exactly how it works. Can someone explain this?

Do we KNOW herd immunity can be achieved with covid 19 eventually?

The people arguing for it, ironically, say it doesn't exist whenever vaccines are discussed.

The idea behind it is to let everyone go about their lives normally and get infected because most people will be able to survive with minimal symptoms and everyone who survives will be immune. This is obviously stupid though because you're willingly letting countless people die and the hospitals wouldn't be able to handle it

Herd immunity means that a disease can barely spread because a large portion of the population is immune (either via vaccine or because they already had the disease).

(This is why getting vaccinated affects not just you personally, but also the people who cannot get vaccinated for various health reasons.)

When it comes to Covid, herd immunity may eventually be a thing, but it's not a reasonable end goal under the current circumstances. Aiming for herd immunity means you just don't give a damn and let everyone get infected, which means the healthcare system is going to get overwhelmed, which means a lot of people will die (this is not a hypothetical scenario, it's something that has happened in multiple countries, e.g. Italy).

Edit: If there was a vaccine, you could just give that to everyone and achieve herd immunity that way - but it's gonna take a while till there is one.

So do vaccines aid in herd immunity or does the necessity of a vaccine indicate that unaided herd immunity isn't possible?

What are examples of successful her immunity? Not sure of success is a good choice of words exactly.
