My county's two hospitals are diverting covid patients to other hospitals in other counties as of this morning. Our rate of infection is 1 in every 205 people. Not quite NYC but pretty damn bad. Apparently patients from Mexico flooding our hospitals because they were unable to get treatment in Mexico.

Florida. Big joke about quarantining New Yorkers because I-95 was blockaded but it is not the only highway.

Notre Dame. They should let the faculty remote teach even if they let the students come to campus.

China. I like this Bloomberg article because the link given will allow adblocker. The graphics card on my PC is too senile to handle ads.

That seems pretty risky. These ain't self contained universities. One is blocks from the hood and the other blocks from some of the hippest spots in the city. Mix everything in and it seems disastrous.

Also add in NYU Polytechnic out in downtown fucking Brooklyn.

I agree. They can set up a classroom so that students and faculty have the choice of in the flesh attendance or virtual attendance. If they think opening is ok, surely there is no reason to demand it. Students determined to cheat just pay for someone to attend their classes as well as take the tests.

I'm thinking it has to do with deposits/money. Those schools cost 70-75k a year to attend. A lot of students might defer rather than pay that for 75k online classes. This way NYU/Columbia and any other school doing in person classes get that deposit before the semester. I believe it is 1,500 from each student and do a wait and see.

Could be interesting if there is a second wave and all those classes go online in middle of semester would they refund tuition or those students just SOL?

Undersecretary Lord talks about providing coronavirus relief to get DoD plants reopened. Maybe Obrador, AMLO, is waiting for this? Or maybe (surely I am wrong about this one) he decided if the gangs rule the countryside, then the gangs shall handle the pandemic.

Where do you draw the line though? Do you immediately shut back down if you get a case or two? If that happens some places will never be open full time. Is everything fine as long as cases don't exceed what they were at the height of the outbreak, and hospitals can handle it?

Yep. It often doesn't get mentioned in the same sentence as NY having the highest total infections. If every state tested 2.6 million instead of some with 75k-200k tested maybe the numbers would be a bit closer between NY and other states.

In terms of percentages? Because NY has the most people in the country and most of them are in one condensed area. That last fact made it easy for the virus to spread quickly. I think numbers in other states would be higher, but not as bad as there.

Also NY waited to close down. Many states, including those on the west coast, didn't wait. That slowed the virus in those areas so even with increased testing, the number of infected wouldn't be anywhere as bad as NY's and NJ's.

I was talking numbers being being closer/higher in other areas not percentages. Obviously we are more educated in here but was just thinking of my friends who just looks at numbers and don't realize certain states/areas test more. Also I'm totally aware of the NY waiting to close and it effects. I live there and posted updates about that state all the time. Was just saying other areas would have higher numbers if they all tested 2.6 million over the same period.

Anyway...Brazil is now #3. 294k total cases out of 735k tests. Compare that to Russia who is #2 with 317k cases with 7.8 million tests. Yikes Brazil is gonna be bad.

If states are able to implement expanded testing and contact tracing then we won't need to see on/off lockdowns as often. States are beginning to open now but there still seems to be a lack of necessary testing to really track how the virus is being spread. It doesn't help though that many people have proven to be extremely stubborn so I'm not confident that contact tracing will be as effective here as in other countries.

Yea Brazil taking #1 in total cases/deaths is possible. But I think #2 seems more likely. We in a different era you can look at what other countries did to flatten their curve. People were debating stuff like universal masks in US just two months ago. Now instead of the experts saying there is no evidence for (insert thing). There are studies coming out about corona. So Brazil has the info now rather taking guess on what should be done.

Those favelas are so densely packed. That if it did take #1 I wouldn't be surprised.

I agree but I have no control over what the people not in my state/area are doing. Other states have decided to open up and at this point the CDC getting as much info about this out the better. This is major change imo. The previous info was that it could live on surfaces for several days. People were wiping down groceries, not touch delivery boxes for a couple days, and other stuff.

i wonder too.

Regarding CDC. Here is their blog article. And I think we all have to be careful not to touch our faces and in particular not touch eyes, nose or mouth.

And sombody define easily before you get all happy about this.

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/how-covid-spreads.html

.

From CDC blog post "Information from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic suggest that this virus is spreading more efficiently than influenza, but not as efficiently as measles, which is highly contagious."

.

Note that CDC still says

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
  • Routinely clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces.
