Basically when my employers hired me they did so in a somewhat dubious manner so I was technically working for them as a contractor, I was desperate for a job so I accepted it. It ended up being a really nice place to work, they were otherwise great bosses, and after a while I was able to convince them to hire me properly, so all seemed well.
With everything that has been happening recently, business has been down, and they've applied for a government payment which entitles all employees who've been employed by them for over a year to $1500 a fortnight. Which as my hours have been severely reduced would have kept me financially secure, however due to the way they hired me initially, despite the fact I've been working for them for almost 5 years now, I do not qualify for the payment. Shockingly enough I'm not feeling too great about this, and the fact that they lied to me about applying for it really doesn't help matters. Logically I know a lot of this is just due to unfortunate circumstances, so I'm wondering is it worth mentioning this to them?

TL;DR: The way my employers hired me has left ineligible to receive a government payment which would have kept me financially secure while my hours are severely reduced, should I bring this up with them?

I would absolutely bring it up to them, depending on your relationship with them.

Did the way they properly hired you occur less than a year ago then?

Yes.

Thank-you, that's actually very helpful.

Yep, happened at the end of last year, and my relationship with them is pretty good, but I've been fortunate enough that I've never really had to bring up issues with them before.

I would definitely say something. Based on your post, it seems really unfair for you to not get that $1500 if youve been there 5 years and the only requirement is for you to have worked there for a year, regardless of how properly hired you were.

According to their records though I've only official been an employee for about 6 months, and that's what the government care about.

It means that instead of being considered an independent contractor who happened to do a lot of work for them, I was became an actual employee.
