What do you gain from renaming Cress to Cless, or Reina to Lenna, or Bartz to Butz?

Come to think, the other two come from games with delayed localizations too. Reina/Lenna even comes from the same game as Bartz/Butz.

Her name was Tina in Japan. Aerith becoming Aeris is actually due to the menu translation being handled by a different person. Even the US version has it as Aerith outside of the menus, unfortunately you first encounter her name in the menu as the default. As such that's the name the game will use for most people. This happened because the English th sound is rendered identically in Japanese as the su sound. So the person doing the menus simply guessed, they didn't know because no one told them, since they just did menus. Already her name had been officially rendered in English by materials in Japan, but this was before the internet was widespread so few realized this upon release.

Also as per the OP, check out the section labeled in this article:

It's not really a relocalization. They had official English names in Japan already.

This also applies for Cloud, who is called Ex-SOLDIER in the game, but this is changed when the player gets to the name selection screen where the default on the name selection is "Cloud." The same also applies for Red XIII, who is called "Red" before naming him, but unlike the latter two, this is seen at the top of a dialogue box during the player's first interactions with him, and changes to "Red XIII" in the name selection screen.

Huh.

All four people introduced here are player characters. Butts, Lena, and Faris are members from the beginning of the story, and Kururu becomes a player character from the latter half of the story.

Could just be Chrome's translation, but then I dunno how to trust its translation when it calls them Butz or Lenna.

Well obviously the translator doesn't know how to translate names either. These errors would never happen if Japanese could perfectly render English in Katakana to begin with. You should be reading the English in the article. The translation software isn't going to have any idea how to disambiguate things.

I didn't translate those names earlier. They're English in the article because they have official English names in Japanese to begin with.

I guess I'll take your word for it since I don't know how to stop Chrome from translating.

I explained it

Aerith's name is meant to sound similar to "earth" due to her connection to the Planet. In the September 1997 issue of the Famitsu magazine, it is said "Aeris" is the transliteration of the word into katakana: "earth" turned into "earisu," Aerith's Japanese name.

It's Earisu in katakana. Not sure where you read that.

Also worth mentioning Earth in katakana is Aasu.

Those are fine; the K and N sounds are 'hard'. But the soft R in the middle screws up my mouth as it goes into the -th. I tend to slur it and just drop the i; Airth (as in earth, mirth, or Perth). Or turn the R into a W, like Air-with.

Sorry but if you think the TH sound equals lisp then you should hate it at the end of any name.
