Aerith becoming Aeris is actually due to the menu translation being handled by a different person. Even the US version has it as Aerith outside of the menus, unfortunately you first encounter her name in the menu as the default. As such that's the name the game will use for most people. This happened because the English th sound is rendered identically in Japanese as the su sound. So the person doing the menus simply guessed, they didn't know because no one told them, since they just did menus. Butts, Lena, and Faris are members from the beginning of the story, and Kururu becomes a player character from the latter half of the story.
