I think the major theory at first was that they were a view into a split timeline caused by Juliet detonating the nuke in the season 5 finale (or at least that was what I thought)... ...then in the series finale it turned out to be some kind of magical purgatory or something? Like they were actually flash forwards to a time after all the characters had died? I dont fully remember but it was a bit of a let down as an answer, and yet simultaneously made me cry profusely because I was so invested in the characters.
