I'm an "essential worker" so I'm still going out semi frequently. I've... been having mixed feelings about this whole thing.

On the one hand I get that I'm lucky to still have a job where many other people have been laid off, especially when people still haven't gotten their stimulus check.

On the other hand...I'm risking my life for not exactly great pay, and honestly I've been thinking of leaving for a while anyway. Problem is I don't really have anything set up for after this is all over with. Unemployment probably gets me more money than working sadly, but I need to be able to get myself a solid job after the pandemic lifts. College... didn't work out for me, so I can't exactly get the training I need there anytime soon.

I'm not sure what to do. That seems to be a standard theme of my life these days.

If you do quit, I would absolutely make sure that you have something else to go to. This pandemic will hit the economy hard, so you have to expect that finding a job will just get harder. Try to also get a relatively safe job in regards to job security if you do, so you can avoid getting fired after getting hired just 'cause you're the new guy and your company has to do layoffs to cope with the economic repercussions.

Okay if you really are sad when you work there then leave. This thing that people say that you are lucky that you have a job doesn't work that way. So if I had a job but every day the Boss abused me I would still be considered lucky? Or if you are woman and you are harrassed you would still stay? No.
Just do what you want. Doesn't matter if you have anything else to do or not, if you are unhappy just leave.

+1. I don't know enough about your money situation or reasons for leaving to give solid advice, but I imagine it's gonna be hella hard to find work coming out of this, especially if you don't have a degree.

Yeah, is what I was thinking as well. I just need to figure out what I can do that falls under "stable" and "Doesn't pay absolute shit".

Oh I would have already left if it was that bad, but I get what you're saying. I am unhappy though, I just don't want to be screwed after I leave.

Hmm. Grocery stores aren't difficult jobs to get. Even if you quit now and get unemployment you should be able to find another job relatively easy if you stick to retail/restaurants. Those places will be doing a lot of hiring once this is over.

That doesn't really help with the "stable" and "pays well" aspects but this might actually be your best opportunity to take a long break if that's what you're after.

On the flip side being out of work for the past month has suuuucked, can't wait to go back.

A lot of my coworkers have quit over health concerns lately. Management likes to ignore their concerns and then implement new safety measures weeks after they quit.

Personally, I've done a great job looking after my health before all this (no drinking, smoking, drugs, I exercise regularly and sleep well), so I'm not too worried about myself, but I don't blame any of my coworkers who quit.

You can't quit and get unemployment usually. Unemployment is for people who lose their jobs.

So make sure you have enough money to survive.

Does that still apply if you quit out of health concerns due to the current pandemic?

Honestly, grovery store is a bottom rung job anyways (no offense), so it is easy to replace at replacement value.

Just make sure you get UE if you do quit, DYL.

You probably could get it in that scenario, but it's a gray zone. Depending on your state, its better to get fired to get it. In PA, I have never seen anyone fail to get UE for calling off repeatedly til fired. Just have an excuse that made it outside your means... in this case... you were calling off because you were afraid of the virus.

YMMV from state to state.

Unemployment doesnt get you more than working. Its designed to give you a portion of what you were getting.

Lmfao... how wrong that is. I make 29.50 an hour and would make more on UE right now. The $600 boost is huge.

If you quit you better have an underlying medical condition or live with someone who does.

Otherwise, you better have enough money on hand to survive for at least a year.

I wouldn't recommend quitting just to quit, but this is likely false.

I think they were forced to close in PA; Pun lives in TX
I guess TX's shutdown must have enough holes in their definition of "essential" to allow them to remain open?

Gamestop probably wouldn't have been forced to close if they hadn't basically given Wolf the middle finger when he order essential shutdowns.
