where is the proof, all I hear is but Chernobyl or great leap forwards. How about we just own up to the fact, the US failed miserably and go from there?

why not, other countries have clearly demonstrated that this virus can be contained with proper government structures in place and theres no literally no proof that China looks like northern Italy after a bubonic plague outbreak at this point!

Probably because US is a democracy. You can't lock people in their homes here like they did in China to enforce quarantines. US still let's people go out to grocery shop.

well you see on one hand you have a dystopic society of oligarchs and vehement party members who will do anything to dismiss the truth including fudging the numbers or shirking responsibility or accountability

Firstly, China is clearly lying. They have a habit of it.

Secondly, nobody has ever faulted China for efficiency. It's the advantage of authoritarianism, so long as you don't take anything else into account.

Thirdly, the US's terrible response is mostly Trump's fault. You could consider factors like landmass, population density, government structure, and culture, but we also have a history of pulling together during trying times. Specifically, under strong unified leadership. Republicans have been playing divisive for so long that it's infected the political culture with obfuscation and resentment. Trump is the consequence. He's a narcissistic manchild who cares more about his image due to the crisis than the people suffering because of it.

They obviously didn't handle covering it up as well as they would have liked.

Trump knew it was a possible threat as early as Sept. of 2019. By January 2020 it was already overtaking China and spilling into Europe. That would have been the time to start taking it seriously.

Even with our infrastructure differing so greatly from China's the president had ample time to prepare and put medical equipment exchange programs in place. But he didn't and is responsible for the deaths of thousands of people simply because he doesn't value American lives.
