Especially after hearing his backstory?

Just cause he has a touching backstory that involves him being a bitter ***hole for no real reason doesn't really justify him being a bitter ***hole for no real reason.

The fact he's still hung up on Harry's mom like, 20 years later is pretty uncomfortable issue. Like if Harry's mom was alive she wouldn't want Harry hanging around him.

Seriously. How do so few get that? If anything his backstory made me dislike him even more, and portrays him as way worse than the small minded, small man who abuses his power to torture kids and happens to have done just one good thing.

That said, the way they made him go out was pretty BS and anticlimactic as well, but that's true of the entire disappointing last book.

I think all the fans are purely from the movie version because Alan rickman is a treasure and made him most sympathetic, single handedly.

Snape is a good character but a terrible person, and I really didnt feel sorry for him at all. The only thing keeping him on the side of good was not being able to get over Lily

His backstory is tragic in a he didnt have to become a monster sort of way.

No, having a vendetta against the main villain (who he was totally cool with supporting before it hurt one single person he liked, mind you) doesn't mean he's not a total scumbag

Nope. I can sympathize with the "innocence lost" angle of his character, but he became a Death Eater because his crush married his high school bully. Everything he did for Harry Potter was because he had a gross incel boner for his mum, even years after his role in her death.

So he reformed and worked with Dumbledore in some convoluted suicide-by-proxy plan to take down the Death Eaters. It doesn't make his actions post-Hogwarts any better, falling into a racial superiority group because the one person who pitied him didn't desire him as a romantic partner.

All of that is one thing. There might be holes in what I'm saying, and if I'm wrong in certain points then I can accept that. But one thing that's irrefutable is how much of a prick he was to innocent students during his "service" to Dumbledore. He was a grown man bullying school children out of bitterness, to the point that he was Neville Longbottom's greatest fear as expressed by the Boggart. The man took out his bitterness on school children, and I think that's a particularly shitty angle that the books didn't take into account when Harry Potter named one of his kids after the man, citing him to be "one of the bravest men I've ever met".

Snape is a jerk-off.
