Obviously Im missing something. I tried asking the Nintendo board earlier last month about what makes the game so special(as Im curious and want to see what the fuss is about)... but you know GameFAQS Nintendo fanboy community... to them even questioning a Nintendo title is blasphemous.

So Im turning to the level headed PotD boards. What makes the game so special? Whats it about? Im a versatile gamer... think Id like it?

You basically move to a deserted island and establish a home there. You start off with a tent, but you can take an interest-free loan from a raccoon/tanooki to build a home. You can decorate it however you want and there is a lot of furniture, wallpaper, and flooring choices. You can customize them too. There's a lot to do, but you don't really have to do anything.

It's my only hope of owning a home because that's impossible IRL.

It's a game that you play at your own pace and with some nice degree of customization and creativity. It has some similarities with The Sims, Harvest Moon, and Stardew Valley. What makes it distinct from those series is the real-time clock and real-time events. The game gives you room to discover the different ways in which it ticks. You can end up playing for 10 minutes a day, or 6 hours a day depending on how much you want to invest.

I'll just throw out there that I got my mom into Animal Crossing with the 3DS game and she fell in love with it. After a long day of work, she would hop on and go fishing for hours. It's a relaxing game for people.

It's in real time too so if you don't want to wait literal months or hours then it's not the game for you.

In saying that my girlfriend said that was the worst and she hated it so much but she hasn't brought it up again since she started playing.

I'd say The Sims gives you way more control over the environment than Animal Crossing. You can literally build an entire neighborhood from the ground up in Sims from every house, community lot, and resident you create; you can also limit the amount of free will the Sims have in their interactions with NPCs. You can't customize everything in Animal Crossing and there is some degree of randomization.
