the last 3 are so horrible with a terrible payoff and undo the previous 6 films.

how can anyone watch all 9 movies back to back and claim that the overall story is coherent at all. The Rey arc is a fucking mess.

Yeah, the ST feels tacked on and a mess. 1-6 is the saga, even though 1 and 2 are worst than the ST.

say what you want about episodes 1 and 2, but at the very least they build up and connect with the third movie and all the pieces laid out by those two movies fall into place and convincingly explain how Palpatine was able to take over the universe.

No they don't but since the prequels are about as bad as the OT is good, this would be kind of a neutral effect.

They definitely do considering they ignore the first 3 and actively negate the middle 3

They literally do an in-universe reset so they can rehash the original trilogy plot line.

They reset it so that the Empire never lost, the Empire still controls the universe, Palpatine was reset as well. They make so that the previous 6 movies are completely inconseqential and have nothing to do with the last 3 movies besides cameos.

Then they undid all the lore previously established by making Rey into an omnipotent god with almost no explanation other than being related to Palpatine even though Palpatine was trained by a Sith lord for years. He wasn't naturally the way he was and even he had limitations in the first 6 movies

it's like a really shitty fan fiction where they re-wrote the original trilogy with self-insert characters then power-crept them and made them into omnipotent gods. It's like a remake that is part of the story it's remaking, does anyone realize how fucking weird that is?

Nah they just had the remaining troops grab the left over equipment and start raising hell again. It's not a retcon. Though I can see where you're coming from in terms of devaluing the ending of the OT.

That was more something that happens between 7 and 8. In 7, the FO felt like sort of a blip on the radar that ended up having more bite than anyone expected. Then in 8 they were suddenly rulers of the galaxy with no explanation. I dunno, maybe they went around bluffing that they could blow up the system if they didn't submit or something. Kinda dumb but then again so was just about everything in 8.

He was resurrected. Happens all the time in fiction. It was dumb, but it was also an episode 9 thing instead of a trilogy thing.

The OT didn't have any loose ends to tie up. Of course it was going to be related in continuity only. I don't get why this is a problem.

Ep 9 dropped the ball in so many ways. Before then, we could chalk it up to the episode 7 subtitle, and I really kinda liked that.

But anyway, I don't see why this is a break of lore. If anything, it just implies he was naturally predisposed in addition to being trained. Big deal.

Because it was cute and fun and therefore does not belong in my precious grimdark srsbusnss sandpaperpants film industry. Things like fun belong in the past with other cheesy things like color and emotive acting.

Also because it contradicted some stupid book or anime or something where there was a storm trooper with a jetpack or something.

I can't tell if you're trying to defend the movies or have some weird issue with this one particular idea.

I agree with you that just about everything that happened in 7, 8, and 9 were dumb, though.

Nah 7 was good. Retreaded some ground but had competent storytelling and a particularly well-developed villain.

It was just 8 and 9 that were mostly stupid.

7 was okay. But 8 had some serious explaining to do to justify how the First Order could make such a technological marvel in secret.

Instead, the FO suddenly controls the whole galaxy because... because the Empire controlled the whole galaxy. Episode 9 says they got so powerful because Palpatine. gr8.

Personally, the Sun Crusher is a serious case a power creep, and it outright destroyed any chance the future directors/writers had of exploring what sort of government was established by the leaders of the Rebellion. That was a bad choice from the very outset imo.

If I had to put it in the original 6, it would probably be middle of the pack. Not great, but not egregiously bad. In a lot of ways I actually think 8 is a better movie, but it basically destroyed any chance of the trilogy having a cohesive story line. And everything about Canto Bight is complete fucking garbage. And Rose crashing into Finn was dumb af. And them trusting a random guy they met in jail was dumb af.

The fact that the FO blew up more planets in two minutes than the empire did at its peak of power was a big enough red flag for me to disregard the ST as nothing more than fan fiction with a budget.

The OT is pretty decent. Although true the PT at least built up to the OT, they are just as bad or worse than the ST. Not sure why they are suddenly getting elevated so much just because most of the ST was bad.

All the PT was bad, while FA was a retread it was at least still fairly coherent and a fun movie.

  • absolutely destroy all characters from previous movies
  • create the most generic mary sue they could
  • generate an obscene number of plot holes
  • and generally just make no fucking sense

I think it's because there's a lot of good/fun PT related EU stuff. In a lot of ways they elevate and contextualize the events of the movies.

And while that doesn't make the movies themselves better, it certainly colors my perception rewatching them. You shouldn't need to know X, Y, and Z from a book, comic, and show to really enjoy the movie in the first place, but those side stories are partially written to address the flaws or holes in the story.

3-7 are pretty fun tbh. 3 is a very Star Wars movie and starts with a blast and ends really fucked up. OT is obvious and 7 felt like we were gonna get some real cool stuff. 1 is only good because of Qui Gon and Maul and 8 because of Luke. 9 gets a bit of credit for Palpatine. 2 is a mess.
