Havent seen it in 15+ years.

Dunno why it gets so much hate, that was thrilling, scary and most importantly original. This feels totally different from the original.

I loved the mindcart scene. I especially loved Willie Scott. I didnt expect to like her right away but she grew on me really quickly. Great physical comedy from her

i think my order now goes Raiders > Temple > Crystal Skull > Last Crusade

I rewatched Temple not that long ago. While it's not a bad film, it's clearly the weakest of the original trilogy. And some of the cultural stereotypes have aged very badly >_>

I thought he was annoying at first but he proves to be a bad ass at the end for saving Indy.

same thing happened with Willie Scott as well

Temple of Doom is criminally underrated. I love it. It's my favorite Indy flick. I love the darker tone and John Williams soundtrack is a masterpiece.

The problem I have it with it is they try to make it funny and light hearted and then 2 minutes later we have a dude ripping a heart out. It's a bit jarring... I also find the female lead in the movie extremely annoying she complains and whines throughout the whole thing.

Temple of Doom is a fine film, but the supporting cast really hold the film back. Shame George Lucas was going through brutal divorce and it shows in the script.

I'm not fond of the female lead either for the same reason. What gets me is the actress that plays Willie Scott either married Steven Spielberg or George Lucas a few years later (I think it's Spielberg).

At the time, speaking from experience and "being there," kids in the mid-80s in my social group enjoyed Temple more than Raiders. I think it is because of the action in the film, there was an arcade game that Atari put out (which is pretty fun) based on the film, and, at the time, we all loved Short Round because he was also in Goonies a year later. Also, it helped that Indy was saving kids in the movie and being reunited with their parents.

I don't know, but those are some reasons why I think kids enjoyed the film more at the time than the first one. Once Crusade came out, however, we all changed our minds...since we were all a little older than anyway.

Today, I think I still like Temple better than Raiders, but Last Crusade is number one for me currently.

Dunno why it gets so much hate

Two reasons.

The first is because it's different from the first one. The lack of Nazis was a huge problem for a lot of people (part of why they brought them back in the third one). It can feel jarring (especially because it's a prequel, but barely tells you it's a prequel unless you're really paying close attention), and that makes people less charitable towards it than they might otherwise have been. And it doesn't help that the first movie was so damned good, which created unrealistic expectations for the second movie - if it had come first, or been a stand-alone film, people wouldn't have complained as much.

And second...

I especially loved Willie Scott.

A lot of people hate her. That hate also plays a huge role in why people dislike the movie.

Lucas and Spielberg have basically both admitted that they wrote her as a terrible annoying character because they were both bitter about women at the time, as they were both going through divorces. She was pretty much there for other characters (and the universe as a whole) to kind of shit on, so they could feel better about themselves. She, in turn, is kind of spiteful and a bit of a shrew (which, again, is their general perception of women at the time, and an excuse to punish her with constant terror - she "deserves" it). In turn, it can make her come across as incredibly grating, which annoys a lot of people. Conversely, some people dislike her because of how much pleasure the movie seems to take in being cruel to her. Either way, it detracts from the film as a whole.

The only reason she's even remotely sympathetic at all is because Kate Capshaw was a great actress, and was able to evoke a bit of charisma in spite of what she was given to work with. Apparently so much so that she and Spielberg eventually got married (and still are).

If you like Willie, you basically like Kate Capshaw. If you hate Willie, you basically hate George Lucas.

Short Round is the other problem some people have with the movie. Some people like him, other people hate him. And if you hate him, it can detract from the movie as a whole.

I agree with you. But, as I mentioned yesterday, if you saw the movie as a kid in the 80s, you probably would like Short Round because you wanted to be in his shoes as a kid as well...adventuring with Indy and what not. If you see the movie for the first time as an adult, I would imagine you wouldn't have the same view on Short Round since you may not be able to identify as him since you are an adult!

Just my thoughts...and it won't apply to everyone, naturally.

I preferred him as Data.

PINCERS OF POWER! PINCERS OF POWER!

...but yeah, lots of people hate kids in movies in general, and Short Round is pretty hyperactive (which can annoy people even more). So for everyone who liked him or every kid who thought he was awesome (or saw themselves in his place), there was someone who thought he was annoying and the movie sucked.

Willie, Short Round, no Nazis, and the "magic thing" not being "Western" were the main four complaints I used to hear back in the day.

I've always felt like it was kind of telling that Fate of Atlantis (the Indy game pretty much everyone loved) had a more likeable female love-interest, no kid sidekick, a very "Western" plot hook, and Nazis. It's basically the Indy recipe for success. And Last Crusade (which everyone loves) is basically low-key likeable female, Western/Christian artifact, Nazis, and the exact opposite of a kid sidekick.

If I'd written Indy 4, I'd probably have followed that pattern and had it be about Nazis trying to find the Spear of Longinus. With a strong but likeable female partner. And no kids. And not have it set in the 1950s with Indy being a broken down old man and it being a bad sci-fi pastiche clunkily fused to the established 30s pulp genre. But that's just me.
