There isn't a single thing about Deadspace that wasn't done better in a dozen other games and it's plot was on par with Star Trek fanfiction written by 15 year olds.

I liked the first Dead Space a lot, the 2nd one less, and the 3rd one I struggled to finish. I only completed it because the guy I was co-op with was real into it. It was kind of blah.

Because its the same criteria we use for every other great game

Look at actually great horror games

Silent Hill 2 has shit combat but who cares? It has the best atmosphere of any horror game ever made, possibly best of any game ever made and the bad combat just goes towards it.
RE2make has a shit story but it has the best level of any horror game ever made. If anything the dumbed down story just adds more to the gameplay.
Outlast - Nothing going for it so plays with the notions of a POV/Camera perspective to give the game unique gimmicks

Deadspace? Boring combat, Bad level design, terrible story, inconsistent blant atmosphere, nothing clever or original, boring audio logs. Boring gray/bown graphics.

It's just a medicore game that's boarderline bad. While all it's defenders can do is insult or ignore people who point out it's shortcomings on par with Trump supporters arguing he's the best president of all time

Hell Dead Space even tried to do the same twist as Silent Hill 2 and fell on it's face 17 times in doing so

As a lifelong horror game fan it bugs me. Sort of like if people were trying to claim After Earth was a great movie while ignoring/shit talking Alien or Terminator or UP.

Dead Space was great. Putting the UI info on Isaac was a cool idea and the dismemberment focused combat was fun. It's basically what Doom 3 was aiming for but better.

Never bothered with 3 but 1 and 2 were great.

Dead space was a fun game with interesting mechanics set in a desolate lonely place.

It didn't do anything revolutionary that was hugely critical to the game. It had nice touches like the UI being on Isaac's suit, or the weapons being tools that Isaac understood in some cases.

The combat not being "boom headshot boom headshot boom headshot" was cool, I thought.

It wasn't a game based around changing horror games. It was a solid game that brought many industry norms together for an enjoyable experience.

As for what it did better than others? Dismemberment based combat rather than "OH MY GOD AIM FOR THE HEAD!!"

Even then the competition for horror games back then was what? Resident Evil 5, Condemned and FEAR 2?

It didn't really need to be revolutionary. It was a better Resident Evil 4 follow up than anything else at the time.
